Search for High-Mass Diphoton Resonances in Proton-Proton Collisions at 13 TeV and Radiation Studies for Calorimetry at the High-Luminosity LHC / Quittnat, Milena ; Dissertori, Günther ETH Zürich (dir.) () ; Wallny, Rainer ETH Zürich (dir.) ()
In this dissertation, two different topics are addressed which are part of the main areas of research of modern high-energy physics experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC): a search for new physics and the development of new detectors. The first part of this dissertation presents the search for high mass diphoton resonances in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment. Top-quark and Higgs boson perspectives at heavy-ion colliders / Enterria, David (CERN)
The perspectives for measuring the top quark and the Higgs boson in nuclear collisions at the LHC and Future Circular Collider (FCC) are summarized. Perturbative QCD calculations at (N)NLO accuracy, including nuclear parton distribution functions, are used to determine their cross sections and visible yields after standard analysis cuts in PbPb and pPb collisions at the LHC (\sqrt{sNN}\ = 5.5, 8.8 TeV) and FCC (\sqrt{sNN}\ = 39, 63 TeV). Design of the Palmer Pickup for Stochastic Pre-Cooling of Hot Rare Isotopes at the CR / Barker, D J (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Dimopoulou, C (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Peschke, C (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Thorndahl, L (CERN)
We report on the design of a Faltin type pickup for the stochastic pre-cooling of rare isotope beams at 740 MeV/u, using a bandwidth of 1-2 GHz, for the Collector Ring (CR) in the FAIR project at GSI. The design difficulties inherent in Faltin rails at these frequencies are described. [...]

Numerical simulations of energy deposition caused by 50 MeV—50 TeV proton beams in copper and graphite targets / Nie, Y (CERN) ; Schmidt, R (CERN) ; Chetvertkova, V (GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung) ; Rosell-Tarrago, G (University of Barcelona) ; Burkart, F (CERN) ; Wollmann, D (CERN)
The conceptual design of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) is being carried out actively in an international collaboration hosted by CERN, for the post–Large Hadron Collider (LHC) era. The target center-of-mass energy of proton-proton collisions for the FCC is 100 TeV, nearly an order of magnitude higher than for LHC. [...]

Non-perturbative measurement of low-intensity charged particle beams / Fernandes, M (CERN ; Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.) ; Geithner, R (Jena U. ; Helmholtz Inst., Jena) ; Golm, J (Jena U.) ; Neubert, R (Jena U.) ; Schwickert, M (Darmstadt, GSI) ; Stöhlker, T (Jena U. ; Helmholtz Inst., Jena ; Darmstadt, GSI) ; Tan, J (CERN) ; Welsch, C P (Liverpool U. ; Cockcroft Inst. Accel. Sci. Tech.)
Non-perturbative measurements of low-intensity charged particle beams are particularly challenging to beam diagnostics due to the low amplitude of the induced electromagnetic fields. In the low-energy antiproton decelerator (AD) and the future extra low energy antiproton rings at CERN, an absolute measurement of the beam intensity is essential to monitor the operation efficiency.
