Achromatic telescopic squeezing scheme and by-products: From concept to validation
/ Fartoukh, S (CERN) ; Solfaroli, M (CERN) ; De Portugal, J Coello (CERN) ; Mereghetti, A (CERN) ; Poyet, A (CERN) ; Wenninger, J (CERN)
The achromatic telescopic squeezing (ATS) scheme has brought an essential conceptual foundation to the HL-LHC project, making possible a strong and clean (achromatic) reduction of β*, an important parameter with respect to which several HL-LHC sub-systems were dimensioned (e.g., the 150 mm aperture of the new inner triplet quadrupoles) or justified (crab-cavities for mitigating the geometric luminosity loss factor at low β* and subsequent large crossing-angle). The basic mechanics of the scheme is shortly reminded, highlighting as well some of its by-products (Landau damping, long-range beam-beam mitigation with octupoles), and a recent improvement which made possible an early, but still partial, implementation of ATS optics in the LHC for the 2017 and 2018 LHC physics runs. First observation of ion beam channeling in bent crystals at multi-TeV energies
/ Redaelli, S (CERN) ; Butcher, M (CERN) ; Barreto, C (CERN) ; Losito, R (CERN) ; Masi, A (CERN) ; Mirarchi, D (CERN) ; Montesano, S (CERN) ; Rossi, R (CERN ; INFN, Rome ; Rome U.) ; Scandale, W (CERN) ; Serrano Galvez, P (CERN) et al.
Planar channeling in bent crystals has been observed in LHC with multi-TeV proton beam in 2015. Two crystals, mounted on novel high-accuracy goniometers (one in the horizontal and one in the vertical plane), are integrated in the LHC collimation system, for studying the feasibility of the crystal-based collimation scheme. Control of large helium cryogenic systems: a case study on CERN LHC
/ Pezzetti, Marco (CERN)
The CERN cryogenic facilities demand a versatile, distributed, homogeneous and highly reliable control system. For this purpose, CERN conceived and developed several frameworks (JCOP, UNICOS, FESA, CMW), based on current industrial technologies and COTS equipment, such as PC, PLC and SCADA systems complying with the requested constraints. [...]

A methodology to compute the critical current limit in Nb$_3$Sn magnets
/ Vallone, G (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Anderssen, E (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Bordini, B (CERN) ; Ferracin, P (LBNL, Berkeley) ; Troitino, J F (CERN) ; Prestemon, S (LBNL, Berkeley)
Numerous experiments have shown that the loads applied to Nb$_3$Sn strands and cables can reduce their critical current. Experiments, performed on uniaxially loaded strands, allowed to define clear laws to describe the evolution of the critical surface as a function of the applied current, field, temperature and strain.
