Measurements of 55Fe activity in activated steel samples with GEMPix / Curioni, A (CERN ; Milan Polytechnic) ; Dinar, N (CERN ; Paris U., VI-VII) ; La Torre, F P (CERN) ; Leidner, J (CERN ; RWTH Aachen U.) ; Murtas, F (CERN ; Frascati) ; Puddu, S (CERN) ; Silari, M (CERN)
In this paper we present a novel method, based on the recently developed GEMPix detector, to measure the 55Fe content in samples of metallic material activated during operation of CERN accelerators and experimental facilities. The GEMPix, a gas detector with highly pixelated read-out, has been obtained by coupling a triple Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) to a quad Timepix ASIC. [...]

Statistics of vacuum breakdown in the high-gradient and low-rate regime / Wuensch, Walter (CERN) ; Degiovanni, Alberto (CERN) ; Calatroni, Sergio (CERN) ; Korsbäck, Anders (Helsinki Inst. of Phys.) ; Djurabekova, Flyura (Helsinki Inst. of Phys.) ; Rajamäki, Robin (Aalto U.) ; Giner-Navarro, Jorge (Valencia U., IFIC)
In an increasing number of high-gradient linear accelerator applications, accelerating structures must operate with both high surface electric fields and low breakdown rates. Understanding the statistical properties of breakdown occurrence in such a regime is of practical importance for optimizing accelerator conditioning and operation algorithms, as well as of interest for efforts to understand the physical processes which underlie the breakdown phenomenon. The LHCb VELO upgrade / Rodriguez Perez, P (Manchester U.) /LHCb VELO upgrade group
The upgrade of the LHCb experiment, planned for 2019, will transform the experiment in a trigger-less system reading out the full detector at the maximum 40 MHz event rate. This will enable the detector to run at instantaneous luminosities of $2x10^{33} cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ and probe physics beyond the Standard Model in the heavy flavour sector with unprecedented precision. Online precision drift gas evaluation and time-to-space calibrations of the ATLAS muon: Spectrometer for LHC Run II
Overview: Precision calibrations coupled with real time monitoring of the drift gas flowing through the ATLAS muon spectrometer drift tube chambers (MDTs) are essential to the observation and measurement of physics signatures in ATLAS having final state muons. These tasks were performed in the first three-year LHC Run 1 by the gas monitoring chamber (GMC) [1,2], shown in Figure 1..

Multipole-field measurements by sampling oblong apertures of accelerator magnets / Köster, Oliver (Darmstadt, Tech. Hochsch. ; CERN) ; Russenschuck, Stephan (CERN) ; Boine-Frankenheim, Oliver (Darmstadt, Tech. Hochsch.)
The rotating search coil is a commonly used tool to measure magnetic fields of accelerator magnets. The coil intercepts the magnetic flux at a radius given by the dimensions of the measurement shaft that comprises a set of search coils for the analog bucking of the main signal from the dipole field component. Monovalent $Li^+$ codoped $Lu_3Al_5O_{12}$:Ce (LuAG:Ce) optical ceramics were fabricated by solid state reaction method and further optimized by an air-annealing process. Optical absorption, radioluminescence spectra and scintillation properties such as light yield, scintillation decay times and afterglow were measured and compared with those of the $Li^+$ free LuAG:Ce ceramic and the commercial LuAG:Ce single crystal samples.
