WP: 8: Collimators & materials for higher beam power beam
Task: 8.2: Modeling & Material Tests for Hadron Beams

Predicting the consequences of highly energetic particle beams impacting protection devices as collimators or high power target stations is a fundamental issue in the design of state-of-the-art facilities for high-energy particle physics. [...]

Optimized structure and vibrational properties by error affected potential energy surfaces / Zen, Andrea ; Zhelyazov, Delyan ; Guidoni, Leonardo
The precise theoretical determination of the geometrical parameters of molecules at the minima of their potential energy surface and of the corresponding vibrational properties are of fundamental importance for the interpretation of vibrational spectroscopy experiments. Quantum Monte Carlo techniques are correlated electronic structure methods promising for large molecules, which are intrinsically affected by stochastic errors on both energy and force calculations, making the mentioned calculations more challenging with respect to other more traditional quantum chemistry tools. Finite temperature electronic simulations beyond the Born-Oppenheimer approximation / Mazzola, Guglielmo ; Zen, Andrea ; Sorella, Sandro
We introduce a general technique to compute finite temperature electronic properties by a novel covariant formulation of the electronic partition function. By using a rigorous variational upper bound to the free energy we are led to the evaluation of a partition function that can be computed stochastically by sampling electronic wave functions and atomic positions (assumed classical). Energy-dependent relative charge transfer cross sections of Cs+ + Rb(5s, 5p) / Nguyen, H (UMR5306) ; Brédy, R (UMR5306) ; Fléchard, X (LPCC) ; DePaola, B D
Magneto optical trap recoil ion momentum spectroscopy is used to measure energy-dependent charge exchange cross sections in the Cs+ + Rb(5s, 5p) system over a range of projectile energies from 3.2 to 6.4 keV. The measurements are kinematically complete and yield cross sections that are differential in collision energy, scattering angle, and initial and final states..

Hadronic Freeze-Out in A+A Collisions meets the Lattice QCD Parton-Hadron Transition Line / Stock, R ; Becattini, F ; Bleicher, M ; Kollegger, T ; Schuster, T ; Steinheimer, J
We analyze hadrochemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS and LHC energies. Employing the UrQMD hybrid transport model we study the effects of the final hadron/resonance expansion phase on the hadron multiplicities established at hadronization. [...]

Observations of ubiquitous compressive waves in the Sun's chromosphere / Morton, R J ; Verth, G ; Jess, D B ; Kuridze, D ; Ruderman, M S ; Mathioudakis, M ; Erdelyi, R
The details of the mechanism(s) responsible for the observed heating and dynamics of the solar atmosphere still remain a mystery. Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves are thought to play a vital role in this process. [...]

Assembly and RF Tuning of the Linac4 RFQ at CERN / Rossi, C (CERN) ; Dallocchio, A (CERN) ; Hansen, J (CERN) ; Lallement, JB (CERN) ; Lombardi, AM (CERN) ; Pugnat, D (CERN) ; Vandoni, G (CERN) ; Timmins, M (CERN) ; Vretenar, M (CERN) ; Mathot, S (CERN) et al.
The fabrication of Linac4 is progressing at CERN with the goal of making a 160 MeV H- beam available to the LHC injection chain as from 2015. In the Linac4 the first stage of beam acceleration, after its extraction from the ion source, is provided by a Radiofrequency Quadrupole accelerator (RFQ), operating at the RF frequency of 352.2 MHz and which accelerates the ion beam to the energy of 3 MeV. Scattering of H- Stripped Electrons from SEM Grids and Wire Scanners at the CERN LINAC4 / Cheymol, B (CERN) ; Chevallay, E (CERN) ; Duraffourg, M (CERN) ; Focker, GJ (CERN) ; Roncarolo, F (CERN) ; Raich, U (CERN) ; Hessler, C (CERN) ; Vuitton, C (CERN) ; Zocca, F (CERN)
At the CERN LINAC4, wire grids and scanners will be used to characterize the H− beam transverse profiles from 45 keV to 160 MeV. The wire signal will be determined by the balance between secondary emission and number of charges stopped in the wire, which will depend on the wire material and diameter, the wire polarization and the beam energy.
