A Magnetic Measurement Model for Real-Time Control of Synchrotrons / Grech, Christian ; Buzio, Marco ; Sammut, Nicholas
In this paper, we present a measurement model for estimating the magnetic field of a synchrotron-type particle accelerator, based on sensors installed in a reference magnet. The model combines the calibration of the individual sensors with the experimental characterization of the magnets to infer, in absolute terms, the value of the average field in the ring, as needed for the real-time feedback control of the accelerator. RF characteristics of unloaded quality factor (Q$_{0}$) and accelerating electric field (E$_{acc}$) were measured for superconducting quarter-wave resonator (QWR) in order to verify the performance. For the accurate measurement of RF characteristics, the measurement method of Q$_{0}$ based RF power and RF coupling coefficient was used, and the measurement uncertainty was calculated with statistics analysis of systematic error in RF measurement system. The electromagnetic calorimeter of the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment (CMS) will be upgraded for the High-Luminosity phase of the LHC, where an unprecedented number of pile-up events (up to 200 simultaneous proton-proton collisions) and a challenging increase in data rate are expected. The current lead tungstate crystals and avalanche photodiode detectors will remain, while the upgrade will address the front-end and off-detector read-out electronics of the barrel region of the calorimeter.
