When physics becomes art: Signatures of the invisible lands in Geneva

Signatures of the Invisible, an exhibition that brings together science and art, arrives in Geneva next week. Thanks to CERN and the London Institute, eleven European artists have worked with physicists from the Laboratory and the result of this collaboration will be shown in the Centre d'Art Contemporain until May.

Imagination has no limits. And unlikely as it may seem, abstract physics can be turned into a piece of art. Curious? Come and discover how physics can be shaped in interesting ways in Signatures of the Invisible, the exhibition, at Geneva's Centre d'Art Contemporain!
Amazing pieces of art such as Sylvie Blocher's video made with the participation of CERN physicists, Paula Pivi's needles installation, or Jérôme Basserode's huge spinning tops are some examples of Signatures of the Invisible, a joint project by CERN and the London Institute, the world's largest college of art and design.
During 1999 and 2000, eleven leading European visual artists worked closely with scientists from CERN. After several visits to the Laboratory and its experiments, the artists held lengthy discussions with physicists and used the full potential of CERN's workshop. The results range from engravings based on particle collisions, installations and metal sculptures to computer art, print making, and video art.
The exhibition opened at London's Atlantis gallery last March to critical acclaim. Now Geneva will host the exhibition until May; afterwards, it will travel to Lisbon. New York, Paris or Japan seem possible future destinations for these unique pieces of art.
