New Bulletin: Latest News

The paper version of the CERN Bulletin will be published twice a month with effect from 18 April 2005. The electronic version will be updated weekly. This year will see many changes in the Bulletin, designed to make it more economical, more compact and more attractive.

One Bulletin printed every two weeks, but updated weekly on-line, equals the same quantity of information as a weekly printed Bulletin.

From 18 April the paper version of the Bulletin will be published twice monthly, so we shall have to stop calling it the "Weekly". The purpose of this change in publication frequency is to redistribute the resources of the Publications Section of the Communications Group so that it can produce new brochures for the general public. However, so as not to compromise on topicality and communication of information, the Official News and General Information sections, the Pension Fund and training announcements and the seminar schedule will continue to be updated weekly. If you have signed up to be informed of the updates, you will continue to receive a weekly e-mail reminding you that the electronic version of the Bulletin has been updated. Official News articles will systematically be published in the paper version of the Bulletin.

These changes represent the first phase of an overhaul aimed at saving resources and paper while maintaining the current level of information. The Bulletin will also get a facelift. The layout will be changed to improve the visibility and attractiveness of the information. The Bulletin was in need of a make-over: the layout was last changed in 1976!

As more and more of you are consulting the electronic version of the Bulletin, we are planning new arrangements for the distribution of the paper version. This will prevent the printing of hundreds of excess paper copies of each edition.

40 years of the Bulletin
The Bulletin has not always been as you know it today. Simon Newman, who joined the CERN Public Information Office, the communication service of the time, in 1968, has made available a history of the Bulletin of which we would like to give you a taste.

"The Bulletin was launched in 1962 and consisted of a few pages carrying official and Staff Association announcements. By 1969, it bore a distinctive masthead the colour of which changed from year to year. The illustrations on the front page began to appear. The Public Information Office (PIO) ensured that this information was published on a regular basis. Regular sections such as the restaurant pages and the weekly calendar of seminars were introduced as official and club announcements multiplied and grew in length. At the time, the PIO was the hub for the dissemination of news and announcements. Its offices were located in Buildings 61 and 64, close to the cafeteria which is an essential source of CERN information. In October 1976, the present masthead and page layout were introduced. In 1980, an illustrated version called Images began to appear periodically. It became a separate publication in parallel with the occasional LEPnews, providing information on the progress of the gigantic LEP Project. In 1991, a similar publication called LHCnews began to draw people's attention to another great adventure. The Bulletin already greatly resembled the one that you are now reading, although a little slimmer, as many of us may well have been in those days."

Top to bottom: three successive versions of the Bulletin. A rudimentary version in 1968, followed by a version with a masthead and illustrations in 1970, and several years after the Bulletin as we know it today.
