Changes in the Printing Service

The print servers at CERN are being replaced and all CERN printers will be gradually migrated to a new infrastructure. This will involve a few small changes for the users, which are highlighted in the following sections.

Windows computers in the CERN domain (NICE XP/2000)

The printer migration in the NICE environment is transparent and will be done automatically.

The only significant change is that the 'CERN Printer Wizard' will be removed. To install a new printer and to monitor or manage its printing queue you should use the native windows interface, as explained at http://cern.ch/WinServices/Help/?kbid=070103

Linux SLC3, SLC4

The migration was transparent and has already been completed for Linux computers. If necessary, you can reconfigure your system again at any time by running the following command:

/usr/bin/cern-config-printers -u

The only significant change for Linux is the disappearance of the xprint command. Use the lpr command instead.

Documentation for SLC3 is available at http://cern.ch/linux/scientific3/docs/printing.shtml and for SLC4 at http://cern.ch/linux/scientific4/docs/printing.shtml

Mac OS X

There is no change for Mac OS X computers. Simply make sure that the printer connections are properly configured as described at:
http://cern.ch/it-div/gencomputing/mac-support/PrinterSelect.htm

Visitors' computers, locating a printer

Printers can be located by name, building and model from the following page: http://cern.ch/Win/Services/Printers

Visitors using Linux and Mac OS can print using the usual lpr command and those using Windows can use the native interface described at http://cern.ch/WinServices/Help/?kbid=070107#visitor
