A new CERN Alerter mechanism

A new version of the CERN Alerter used for sending urgent messages was installed in July on all centrally managed NICE computers.

This latest version is based on RSS (Really Simple Syndication) and all alerts are now displayed in an Internet Explorer window (see the picture). You can print the window by right-clicking on the alert background and selecting the Print option from the menu.

If the message is not urgent, then the alert will only appear as a "balloon" window the following morning or at next logon.

Non-Windows computers can also subscribe to this service by using their browser as an RSS reader (Really Simple Syndication). All recent web browsers can act as RSS readers, including Firefox and Safari. Simply subscribe to the following RSS feed: http://cern.ch/cernalerts/alerts.aspx to see all messages sent by the central services. More information on the CERN Alerter is available at: https://cern.ch/winservices/Help/?kbid=060810. Documentation on reading RSS feeds from Linux is available at: http://cern.ch/linux/documentation/rss.shtml. And for Mac OS X we recommend using Safari: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/safari/.

Only the IT Manager on Duty (MOD) can send messages. If you wish to send a message using the CERN Alerter, please contact the MOD via email: mod@cern.ch. The IT MOD will then decide whether or not to send the message.
