Lecture by Hubert Reeves: "The future of life on Earth"

THURSDAY 15 NOVEMBER 2007 at 8.00 p.m.

CERN, Globe of Science and Innovation, Route de Meyrin, 1211 Geneva

Our planet is unwell, as witnessed by global warming, the exhaustion of natural resources, soil and water pollution, the uneven distribution of wealth, human malnutrition, the extinction of species, etc. Is the situation really so dire? What should we make of the theories that challenge this pessimism?

Hubert Reeves will review the threats facing our planet in detail, based on the most credible scientific data available - and the associated uncertainties - and conclude that it is not life on Earth but the future of the human race that is in danger. Is the fate of mankind, whose origins go back millions of years, to be decided in the space of a few decades? Our future is in our own hands. We must act before it’s too late.

Hubert Reeves, who has written many books on cosmic evolution, including "Patience dans l’azur" and "Poussières d’étoiles", is an astrophysicist and a research director at the CNRS, the French national scientific research centre.

Entrance free. By reservation only: +41 (0)22 767 76 76

The lecture will be in French.
