CERN and UNOSAT continue their collaboration

Carlos Lopes, Executive Director of UNITAR with CERN former Director-General, Robert Aymar, meeting to sign a collaboration agreement.

On Monday 8 December 2008, CERN’s Director-General, Robert Aymar, and the UN Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNITAR, Carlos Lopes, signed a collaboration agreement between The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and CERN.

The agreement will allow UNOSAT to continue to process its satellite imagery using CERN resources. UNOSAT is the UN Operational Satellite Applications Programme, which provides satellite solutions to relief and development organisations to help make a difference in the life of communities exposed to poverty, hazards and risk, or affected by humanitarian crises.

CERN has hosted the UNOSAT group for several years but since UNOSAT has recently become part of UNITAR, a contract amendment was produced to reflect this change. Carlos Lopes took this opportunity to meet CERN’s Director-General to express thanks to CERN, and to sign the new agreement.
