LHC Experiments: refinements for the restart

As the LHC restart draws closer, the Bulletin will be taking a look at how the six LHC experiments are preparing and what they have been up to since last September. In this issue we start with a roundup of the past 10 months of activity at CMS and ATLAS, both technical work and outreach activities. >>

An important day for European science

Today is an important day for the future of European science. It is the day on which CERN’s relationship with the European Union reaches maturity. >>

The latest from the LHC

Work on closing up sectors in the LHC tunnel. The foreseen shutdown work on the LHC is proceeding well, including the powering tests with the new quench protection system. >>

Astroparticle physics: the new ASPERA-2 programme

On 7 July the ASPERA-2 programme funded by the European Commission was officially launched in Hamburg with the goal of creating a sustainable structure for the coordination of astroparticle physics in Europe. CERN, which is a participant in the programme, could play an important role in this respect. >>

CERN Courier celebrates 50th anniversary

"(…) An information paper intended to help every staff member to feel at home in the Organization and to maintain the ideal of European co-operation and the team spirit which are essential to the achievement of our final aim: scientific research on an international scale. >>

In the midst of a media frenzy!

Since the start-up of the LHC in September last year there has been a tremendous increase in interest from the world’s media in CERN and the LHC. >>

The Users Office turns 20

20 years ago, in the summer of 1989, an office was created to assist the thousands of users who come to CERN each year, working over the broad range of projects and collaborations. >>

Enhanced collaboration between CERN and India

On Monday 22 June, Bikash Sinha, Director of the SAHA Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP) and the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC) in Kolkata, India and Rolf Heuer, CERN Director-General, signed new protocols to the long standing agreement between the Indian Atomic Energy Commission and CERN. This provides a framework for collaboration in low energy nuclear physics between SAHA and VECC and the ISOLDE experiment at CERN. >>

Awards aplenty in Krakow

CERN will be well represented this year at the award ceremony organized by the European Physical Society (EPS) in Krakow. The Gargamelle Collaboration is being awarded the High Energy and Particle Physics prize, while Maurizio Pierini shares the Young Physicist Prize. Both Mick Storr and Andrzej Siemko will be awarded the Medal of the Polish Commission of National Education. >>

Steven Weinberg visits CERN

Steven Weinberg visiting the ATLAS cavern accompanied by Peter JenniIt was no surprise that the CERN audience arrived early in the Globe of Science and Innovation for the colloquium on 7 July. >>

Giants for cryogenics

It takes 130 tonnes of liquid helium to cool down the LHC. In some situations—during a shutdown, for instance—this enormous volume of helium has to be removed from the machine and stored elsewhere. While this is a straightforward operation from the technical point of view, in logistical terms storing such a huge amount of the special element that is helium is far from trivial. >>

A magnetic skier

Swiss downhill ski champ Dominique Gisin will be the guest of Swiss-German TV show Sportpanorama, to be broadcast on Channel 2 of Schweizer Fernsehen (SF2) on 19 July. The idea behind the show is to "fix it" for guests to do something they have always wanted but never had the opportunity to do. Where other sportsmen and women might have chosen acrobatics or bungee-jumping, this young champion asked to visit CERN ! >>
