CERN CC v Geneva XI Stars CC (Friendly) at CERN
on July 25th, 2010

On a very sunny and pleasant day, Captain Bolton won the toss and elected to bat. Ahmed and Keigwin opened the innings, Keigwin departing early after offering a dolly catch. Wickets kept falling till Anand joined Ahmed. Both started building the CERN innings with brilliant hitting by Ahmed all around the ground. After the drinks break, Anand and Ahmed both got out with Ahmed on 74 runs (6 sixes and 7 fours) being the top scorer of CERN’s innings. Onions kept CERN’s innings ticking over until the end, scoring 35. CERN CC was eventually all out for 204 runs in the last over.

A healthy lunch break with tables full of fruit, Aloo Parathas and sandwiches was served to both the teams.

The response from XI Stars was explosive, with 60 runs on the board in just 6 overs. Bolton had to retire injured and stand-in captain Onions kept trying different options, changing bowlers to try to control the game but nothing succeeded and finally XI Stars passed the CERN total in 32 overs and won the game with 5 wickets in hand.

Many thanks to Zoe Crook for scoring.

The CERN Cricket team travelled to St Vallier in the South of France to take on Riviera CC on the weekend of July 10th/11th.

In the first match, played on Saturday, CERN CC amassed a total of 171/6, Kumar top scoring with 54* and Osborne making 39, Ravi taking 3/38 for Riviera CC. In their reply Riviera were able to overcome the CERN total in making 173/4, with both Bullen and Matthews making half centuries, 65* and 51* respectively, and thus won by 6 wickets.

On Sunday, a nine-per-side, two innings of 15 overs per team match was played. Riviera batted first and made 78/5 with Arvind making 27. CERNs first innings total of 142/2 with half centuries for Osborne and Kumar, both making 59, saw them establish a healthy first innings lead. In their second innings Riviera made 104 all out, with Flynn making 37, and Barrett 30. Onions took 3/13, and Kumar took his match total to 4 wickets. The target was 41 to win, and despite a stumble at the end that saw Sadish take a hat-trick, CERN CC won the match by four wickets.

The matches were played with great spirit and sportsmanship by both sides, the visiting team greatly enjoyed the hospitality, and the sights of St. Vallier.
