Photography Competition
Cast your minds back to August, temperatures soared up to 34 degrees Celsius, rainfall was scarce and the Staff Association in conjunction with the CERN Photo Club launched its Summer Photography Competition.
CERN clubs are subsidised by the Staff Association and CERN administration. Clubs offer sports, leisure and cultural activities, enhancing non-professional relations between CERN staff members and facilitating integration of them and their families into the local area. Clubs are run under the supervision of the Staff Association through the Clubs Coordinating Committee (CCC).
Anyone working at CERN or member of a CERN club were eligible to submit an entry for the competition, which was split into two categories; “Summer at CERN” and “Summer”.
In the category “Summer at CERN”, the following photos won, in reverse order:
Third Prize, Merlene Tanke: One would think this little girl was the only one in the audience of this year’s Hardronic, but in fact, there was a big group of people behind her! Merlene won a month’s subscription with the CERN Fitness Club.
Second Prize, Africa Marco-Gimeno, ecological mowing … “It's late, I hear bells, am I working too hard and going crazy?”
Africa won a 50 euro Go Sport voucher.
First Prize, Andrea Musso. Andrea returned from lunch to find that in this building, which is not installed with air conditioning, all the windows were wide-open and snapped the photo with his mobile phone.
Andrea won a one-year subscription with the Photo Club.
In the category “Summer” the following wonderful photos won:
Third prize, Merlene Tanke: Summer means sunflowers and I wanted to take them from a more unusual perspective.
Merlene won an evening session on the CERN Table Football Club’s table football game!
Second prize, David Myers. This photo was taken in a beautiful cove in Deia, on the west coast of Mallorca, I call it ‘A Summer in Mallorca’, inspired by George Sand’s book which is entitled “A Winter in Mallorca” Apparently, it was featured in a British TV film and consequently become much better known. David won a 50 euro Gift card from Go Sport.
First prize went to Andrea Musso for this photo, taken in Indonesia, close to sunset when locals gather on the beach to cool off.
Andrea won a Brother printer, kindly offered by the CERN Micro Club.
The judges of the competition were overwhelmed by the high quality of photos in both categories and selecting the best three from each was a tough job. Once the winners selected, their works were put on display in the cabinets between the Staff Association offices and Restaurant 1 for all to admire.
The prize giving ceremony was held on Thursday 22 November where all participants were invited to a reception, kindly hosted by the Staff Association and attended by those club presidents who kindly contributed to organising the competition and donated prizes.
