CERN Cricket Club

The CERN Cricket Club (CCC) was founded in 1965, and is the second oldest Club in Switzerland. CERN CC was a founder member of the Swiss Cricket Association in 1980 (which became Cricket Switzerland in 2014). In the early years, CERN did not have a ground and played on various green spaces around the Geneva area (football pitches, hockey pitches etc.). Net practice at that time was held on the Meyrin site, initially near the kindergarten and then next to the road where Building 40 is now located. It was only in the mid-70s, when the CERN SPS was constructed that CERN CC, at long last, found a home ground behind building 867 on the new Prevessin site. The pitch was initially at 90 degrees to the current pitch and behind the hut until one season CERN decided to construct a storage area on the ground and a new strip had to be laid in an emergency mid-season. The strip was a 6 foot wide nylon cricket mat laid on grass, which had to be rolled before each game. It was used until the 2001 season when a permanent strip was laid on a concrete and tarmac base.  In 2014, the club replaced the wicket by a wider one, installed a new practice strip and re-seeded parts of the ground damaged during the Bosons & More concert in September 2013.

Currently

Matches are played almost every Sunday during the season against clubs in Switzerland in the Cricket Switzerland 40 over league and T20 competitions, as well as friendlies against teams from France (Rhone CC, Riviera CC and Strasbourg Strollers CC) and the UK (Trafford Solicitors CC).

Cricket nets take place at the ground on Thursday evenings starting at 18:00 until around 20:00, from mid-April to late September, weather permitting.  For 2019 the first net practice is on April 11th and the first match on April 14th.

Everyone is welcome to join the club and we have players of many nationalities and various degrees of expertise.

Full details of how to join the club, the fixtures, match results etc. can be found at http://cern.ch/cricket/.
