The Gamma Factory (GF) initiative proposes to create novel research tools at CERN by producing, accelerating and storing highly relativistic partially stripped ion beams in the LHC rings and by exciting their atomic degrees of freedom by lasers, to produce high-energy photon beams. Their intensity would be several orders of magnitude higher than those of the presently operating light sources in the particularly interesting gamma-ray energy domain reaching up to 400 MeV. [...]

The electron spectrometer for the Advanced Wakefield (AWAKE) experiment at CERN has been tested using an electron beam derived from partially-stripped ions accelerated in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). The remaining electrons are stripped by passage of the beam through a thin screen upstream from the spectrometer, and using knowledge of the ion beam charge and energy, models of the spectrometer response could be verified..

AWAKE++: The AWAKE Acceleration Scheme for New Particle Physics Experiments at CERN / Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Bartmann, Wolfgang (CERN) ; Caldwell, Allen Christopher (Max-Planck-Institut fur Physik (DE)) ; Calviani, Marco (CERN) ; Chappell, James Anthony (University of London (GB)) ; Crivelli, Paolo (ETH Zurich (CH)) ; Damerau, Heiko (CERN) ; Depero, Emilio (ETH Zurich (CH)) ; Doebert, Steffen (CERN) ; Gall, Jonathan (CERN) et al.
The AWAKE experiment reached all planned milestones during Run 1 (2016-18), notably the demonstration of strong plasma wakes generated by proton beams and the acceleration of externally injected electrons to multi-GeV energy levels in the proton driven plasma wakefields. During Run~2 (2021 - 2024) AWAKE aims to demonstrate the scalability and the acceleration of electrons to high energies while maintaining the beam quality. [...]

Particle physics applications of the AWAKE acceleration scheme / Wing, Matthew (University of London (GB)) ; Caldwell, Allen Christopher (Max-Planck-Institut fur Physik (DE)) ; Chappell, James Anthony (University of London (GB)) ; Crivelli, Paolo (ETH Zurich (CH)) ; Depero, Emilio (ETH Zurich (CH)) ; Gall, Jonathan (CERN) ; Gninenko, Sergei (Russian Academy of Sciences (RU)) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Hartin, Anthony (University of London (GB)) ; Keeble, Fearghus Robert (University of London (GB)) et al.
The AWAKE experiment had a very successful Run 1 (2016-8), demonstrating proton-driven plasma wakefield acceleration for the first time, through the observation of the modulation of a long proton bunch into micro-bunches and the acceleration of electrons up to 2 GeV in 10 m of plasma. The aims of AWAKE Run 2 (2021-4) are to have high-charge bunches of electrons accelerated to high energy, about 10 GeV, maintaining beam quality through the plasma and showing that the process is scalable. A Rubidium Vapor Source for a Plasma Source for AWAKE / Plyushchev, Gennady (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Kersevan, Roberto (CERN) ; Petrenko, Alexey (CERN) ; Muggli, Patric (CERN ; Munich, Max Planck Inst.)
We present the scheme for a rubidium vapor source that is used as a plasma source in the AWAKE plasma wakefield acceleration experiment. The plasma wakefield acceleration process requires a number of stringent parameters for the plasma: electron density adjustable in the (1-10)$\times$10$^{14}$cm$^{-3}$ range, 0.25% relative density uniformity, sharp ($<$10cm) density ramps at each end, density gradient adjustable from -3 to +10% over 10m, and %-level density step near the beginning the plasma column. Upgrade of the two-screen measurement setup in the AWAKE experiment / Turner, Marlene (CERN ; Graz, Tech. U.) ; Clerc, Vincent (CERN) ; Gorgisyan, Ishkhan (CERN) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Mazzoni, Stefano (CERN) ; Petrenko, Alexey (CERN)
The AWAKE project at CERN uses a self-modulated \SI{400}{GeV/c} proton bunch to drive GV/m wakefields in a \SI{10}{m} long plasma with an electron density of $n_{pe} = 7 \times 10^{14}\,\rm{electrons/cm}^3$. We present the upgrade of a proton beam diagnostic to indirectly prove that the bunch self-modulated by imaging defocused protons with two screens downstream the end of the plasma. [...]

Proton Beam Defocusing as a Result of Self-Modulation in Plasma / Turner, Marlene (CERN) ; Petrenko, Alexey (CERN) ; Gschwendtner, Edda (CERN) ; Lotov, Konstantin (Novosibirsk, IYF) ; Sosedkin, Alexander (Novosibirsk, IYF)
The AWAKE experiment will use a \SI{400}{GeV/c} proton beam with a longitudinal bunch length of $\sigma_z = 12\,\rm{cm}$ to create and sustain GV/m plasma wakefields over 10 meters . A 12 cm long bunch can only drive strong wakefields in a plasma with $n_{pe} = 7 \times 10^{14}\,\rm{electrons/cm}^3$ after the self-modulation instability (SMI) developed and microbunches formed, spaced at the plasma wavelength.
