Capturing and Analyzing User Behavior in Large Digital Libraries
/ Gvianishvili, Giorgi (CERN) ; Le Meur, Jean-Yves (CERN) ; Šimko, Tibor (CERN) ; Caffaro, Jérôme (CERN) ; Marian, Ludmila (CERN) ; Kaplun, Samuele (CERN) ; Chan, Belinda (CERN) ; Rajman, Martin (EPFL)
The size of digital libraries is increasing, making navigation and access to information more challenging. Improving the system by observing the users’ activities can help at providing better services to users of very large digital libraries. [...]

Citation graph based ranking in Invenio
/ Marian, Ludmila (CERN) ; Le Meur, Jean-Yves (CERN) ; Rajman, Martin (EPFL, Lausanne) ; Vesely, Martin (EPFL, Lausanne)
Invenio is the web-based integrated digital library system developed at CERN. Within this framework, we present four types of ranking models based on the citation graph that complement the simple approach based on citation counts: time-dependent citation counts, a relevancy ranking which extends the PageRank model, a time-dependent ranking which combines the freshness of citations with PageRank and a ranking that takes into consideration the external citations [...]

INSPIRE: a new scientific information system for HEP
Reference: Poster-2009-112
Keywords: INSPIRE CDS-Invenio SPIRES
Created: 2009. -1 p
Creator(s): Ivanov, R; Raae, L
The status of high-energy physics (HEP) information systems has been jointly analyzed by the libraries of CERN, DESY, Fermilab and SLAC. As a result, the four laboratories have started the INSPIRE project – a new platform built by moving the successful SPIRES features and content, curated at DESY, Fermilab and SLAC, into the open-source CDS Invenio digital library software that was developed at CERN. INSPIRE will integrate present acquisition workflows and databases to host the entire body of the HEP literature (about one million records), aiming to become the reference HEP scientific information platform worldwide. It will provide users with fast access to full-text journal articles and preprints, but also material such as conference slides and multimedia. INSPIRE will empower scientists with new tools to discover and access the results most relevant to their research, enable novel text- and data-mining applications, and deploy new metrics to assess the impact of articles and authors. In addition, it will introduce the "Web 2.0" paradigm of user-enriched content in the domain of sciences, with community-based approaches to scientific publishing. INSPIRE represents a natural evolution of scholarly communication built on successful community-based information systems, and it provides a vision for information management in other fields of science. Inspired by the needs of HEP, we hope that the INSPIRE project will be inspiring for other communities.

INVENIO Integrated Digital Library : Conference CERN workshop on Innovations in Scholarly Communication (OAI5)
Reference: Poster-2007-001
Keywords: Invenio Digital Repository Open access
Original source: No
Created: 2007. -1 p
CERN has long been committed to the free dissemination of scientific research results and theories. Towards this end, CERN's own institutional repository, the CERN Document Server (CDS) offers access to CERN works and to all related scholarly literature in the HEP domain. Hosting over 500 document collections containing more than 900,000 records, CDS provides access to anything from preprints and articles, to multimedia information such as photographs, movies, posters and brochures. The software that powers this service, CDS Invenio, is distributed freely under the GNU GPL and is currently used in approximately 15 institutions worldwide. In this poster session, we explain the use of CDS Invenio to manage a repository of scientific literature. We outline some of the issues faced during the lifecycle of a document from acquisition, processing and indexing to dissemination. In particular, we focus on the features and technology developed to meet the complexities of managing scientific information in the LHC era of large international collaborations each of which has its own distinct needs and requests.

The Workflow of LHC Papers
/ Marian, Ludmila (speaker) (CERN)
In this talk, we will explain how CERN digital library services have evolved to deal with the publication of the first results of the LHC.
We will describe the work-flow of the documents on CERN Document Server and the diverse constraints relative to this work-flow.
We will also give an overview on how the underlying software, Invenio, has been enriched to cope with special needs.
In a second part, the impact in terms of user access to the publication of the experiments and to the multimedia material will be detailed.
Finally, the talk will focus on how the institutional repository (CDS) is being linked to the HEP disciplinary archive (INSPIRE) in order to provide users with a central access point to reach LHC results..
