CMS iRPC clustering algorithm and hit reconstruction
/ CMS Muon Collaboration
One of the upgrades of the CMS RPC system is the installation of new chambers – the improved Resistive Plate Chambers – with a new readout technology, achieving a space resolution along the strip of about 2 cm, enabling the inclusion of the RPC hit in the CMS muon reconstruction. The main characteristic of the improved RPC is the two side strip readout which makes a new clusterization algorithm necessary. [...]

Hessian-free force-gradient integrators
/ Schäfers, Kevin (Bergische U., Wuppertal (main)) ; Finkenrath, Jacob (Bergische U., Wuppertal (main) ; CERN) ; Günther, Michael (Bergische U., Wuppertal (main)) ; Knechtli, Francesco (Bergische U., Wuppertal (main))
We propose a new framework of Hessian-free force-gradient integrators that do not require the analytical expression of the force-gradient term based on the Hessian of the potential. Due to that the new class of decomposition algorithms for separable Hamiltonian systems with quadratic kinetic energy may be particularly useful when applied to Hamiltonian systems where an evaluation of the Hessian is significantly more expensive than an evaluation of its gradient, e.g. [...]

Optimization using pathwise algorithmic derivatives of electromagnetic shower simulations
/ Aehle, Max (Unlisted, DE) ; Novák, Mihály (CERN) ; Vassilev, Vassil (Princeton U.) ; Gauger, Nicolas R. (Unlisted, DE) ; Heinrich, Lukas (Tech. U., Munich (main)) ; Kagan, Michael (SLAC) ; Lange, David (Tech. U., Munich (main))
Among the well-known methods to approximate derivatives of expectancies computed by Monte-Carlo simulations, averages of pathwise derivatives are often the easiest one to apply. Computing them via algorithmic differentiation typically does not require major manual analysis and rewriting of the code, even for very complex programs like simulations of particle-detector interactions in high-energy physics. Assessing the origin of the LHC beam halo
/ Rakic, Milica (CERN ; Ecole Polytechnique, Lausanne) ; Hermes, Pascal (CERN) ; Redaelli, Stefano (CERN) ; Butti, Daniele (CERN) ; Mirarchi, Daniele (CERN) ; Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Bartosik, Hannes (CERN) ; Hostettler, Michi (CERN) ; Kostoglou, Sofia (CERN) ; Seidel, Mike (PSI, Villigen)
Measurements of the transverse beam-halo population at large amplitudes in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) provide crucial insights into the stored beam energy near the LHC collimators. These particles do not contribute significantly to the luminosity but their loss could impose limitations on accelerator performance through sudden loss spikes or even collimator damage in case of fast beam failures. Characterization and beam test measurements of CMS Phase-2 luminometers
/ Kadlecsik, Á (Eotvos U.) ; Auzinger, G (CERN) ; Bakhshiansohi, H (Isfahan Tech. U.) ; Dabrowski, A E (CERN) ; Delannoy, A G (Tennessee U.) ; Dalavi, V (Isfahan Tech. The physics program of the HL-LHC requires high-precision (≲1%) luminosity determination. Two new luminosity detectors are being developed by the CMS BRIL (Beam Radiation, Instrumentation, and Luminosity) project: the Fast Beam Condition Monitor (FBCM), a standalone detector with unique timing capabilities, and the Tracker Endcap Pixel (TEPX) detector augmented with real-time cluster reconstruction in the FPGA of a dedicated back-end board at 10% of the full level-1 trigger rate. In the context of the Antihydrogen Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy (AEgIS) located at CERN, positron-positronium converters with a high positron-positronium conversion efficiency have been designed in both reflection and transmission geometries. The converters utilize nanochanneled silicon target technology with positron conversion efficiencies up to around 50% and around 16%, at room temperature and in the absence of magnetic fields, for reflection and transmission respectively.
