Inception of evaporative dryout for CO2 in milliscale pipe flows
/ Cantini, Giulio (Bath U. ; CERN) ; Hellenschmidt, Desiree (CERN) ; Pedano, Camila (CERN) ; Petagna, Paolo (CERN) ; Sangan, Carl (Bath U.) ; Carnevale, Mauro (Bath U. ; CERN)
Carbon dioxide is a cost-effective, reliable and environmentally-friendly refrigerant with increasing employment in evaporator design. A clear understanding of the underlying flow physics, coupled with robust
prediction of phase change through boiling, is necessary to enable widespread uptake of CO2 as a coolant.
In scenarios such as nuclear reactors or thermal management in silicon detectors (e.g., Large Hadron Collider
at CERN), employing saturated CO2
in milliscale pipes introduces further uncertainties in the design process,
particularly regarding its behaviour at high vapour quality. [...]

Performance tests of the B-RAD survey meter and portable γ-spectrometer in a clinical environment
/ Silari, Marco (Milan, Polytech. ; CERN) ; Brambilla, Marco (INFN, Bologna) ; Carriero, Alessandro ; Franco, Pierfrancesco ; Loi, Gianfranco ; Lorenzoli, Michele ; Matheoud, Roberta
Introduction: This note describes performance test of B-RAD, a commercial γ-survey meter/portable γ-spectrometer designed to operate in strong magnetic field. The
instrument consists of an active probe housing a cylindrical LaBr3 crystal, and a central unit connected by a cable.
Methods: The measurements were performed at an MR-Linac Elekta Unity (1.5 T) and a Philips Ingenia (3 T) MRI system, by measuring the H*(10) rate and the
gamma energy distributions using two certified radioactive sources of 57Co and 137Cs providing a reference irradiation while the detector was exposed to increasing
values of the magnetic field. [...]

Production and study of antihydrogen in the Athena Experiment
/ Genova, P (Pavia U.) ; Amoretti, M (INFN, Genoa) ; Amsler, C (Zurich U.) ; Bonomi, G (CERN) ; Bowe, P D (Aarhus U.) ; Canali, C (Genoa U.) ; Carraro, C (Genoa U.) ; Cesar, C L (Rio de Janeiro Federal U.) ; Charlton, M (Swansea U.) ; Doser, M (CERN) et al.
In the last three years of data taking, the ATHENA experiment at the CERN Antiproton Decelerator facility has been able to produce large amounts of antihydrogen atoms and to study the formation process in detail. Moreover, in 2004, ATHENA tried to produce antihydrogen by means of laser stimulation. [...]

Abstract
The recognition of the early stage of radiation aging and the aggregation of point defects into nanometric clusters pose significant challenges for nuclear structural materials. In this study, we employ positron annihilation spectroscopy to characterize various alloys exposed to severe radiation conditions. [...]

Forest breaks improve employees’ health and attitudes towards work
/ Longman, Daniel P (Loughborough U.) ; Todorova, Yvanna (Loughborough U.) ; Bishop, Nicolette C (Loughborough U.) ; Coates, Janine K (Loughborough U.) ; James, Lewis J (Loughborough U.) ; Lintuluoto, Adelina (CERN) ; Shaw, Colin N (U. Zurich (main))
Industrialisation has rapidly transformed human environments, delivering significant benefits but also introducing urban stressors – such as air pollution, noise and light – that compromise health. In the 21st century,
urban populations experience high levels of chronic stress and related health issues, with urban office workers
being particularly vulnerable. [...]

Il y a 40 ans : la découverte en 1983 des bosons W et Z au CERN
/ Froidevaux, Daniel (CERN)
(1) Participation à la mise en oeuvre, à la prise de données et à leur analyse, du détecteur UA2 qui recherchait les traces des particules issues des collisions proton-antiproton du supersynchrotron SPS ;
(2) participation à la découverte en 1983 des bosons intermédiaires W+, W- et Z0, médiateurs de la force nucléaire faible, et premières études de leurs propriétés ;
(3) puis, à partir de 1990, contribution aux travaux de simulation de la physique du collisionneur LHC et à l’optimisation de ses détecteurs, dans le but de découvrir le boson de Higgs (ce qui a été réalisé en 2012)..
