Get out of the tunnel and make your way to the Palais!
On 15 September from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. the Palais des Nations will open its doors for a programme that promises fun, education and interest for adults and children alike. CERN will take part in this multicultural celebration.
2012 has been declared the international year of sustainable energy for all, and that will be one of the headline themes of this Open Day at the United Nations Office at Geneva. From CERN there will be lectures on the Organization’s green projects and energy, displays such as the Solar Club’s water fountain and the solar panel developed using vacuum technologies that were created for CERN accelerators, and films on the Laboratory's activities.
Sustainable energy isn’t the only subject on the programme. As 15 September is also International Day of Democracy, the United Nations and its partners will offer a range of activities on the subject, including an opportunity to hear Professors Bernard Baertschi, Oreste Foppiani and Alexandre Lambert share their insights about Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the spirit of the Enlightenment and democracy.
Throughout the Saturday event, the public will be given the opportunity to explore new and unusual aspects of sustainable energy for all, democracy, or simply the various missions of the different sections of the United Nations. Thus, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research, UNITAR, will give anyone in Geneva that day a chance to witness a demonstration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which will be broadcasting airborne imagery of the Palais des Nations and Ariana Park.
More than an official event, this 15 September is intended above all as a chance to meet and explore, suitable for the whole family. The stands and stages set up by permanent missions will give visitors a glimpse of the unique cultures of the world, from Brazil to Japan. The attractions include dance, music and a fashion show.
