La messa è finita

Directed by Nanni Moretti (Italy, 1985) 94 minutes

Moretti continues his study on society and individuality, exploring the relationships between a young priest (interpreted by Nanni Moretti himself), returning after years to his home village in the middle of a spiritual crisis, and his old community. Moretti is appalled by the confusion of his townsfolk. Everybody seems to be searching for values, in an epoch that hasn’t yet come to terms with the past, and isn’t ready to cope with the present.

Unable to communicate with his old friends, Moretti cannot even count on solace from his own family equally shattered by the prevailing confusion. Ironic, witty and hilarious as only Nanni Moretti can be, this is probably one of the best films in his entire production.

Caro Diario

Directed by Nanni Moretti (Italy, 1993) 100 minutes

Last film in this mini-retrospective on Nanni Moretti, “Caro Diario”, is a semi-autobiographical film in the style of a documentary, directed by Nanni Moretti in 1993. The film consists of three autobiographical chapters of an open diary: personal stories and reflections by writer/director Nanni Moretti, playing himself as a loner and narrating the film, sometimes in voice-over, sometimes on-screen. The film has an ironic wit and a casual style that is refreshing to watch. In the first segment, he just drives around Rome on his Vespa, admiring housing projects, spouting admiration for Jennifer Beale, and searching for the spot where Pier Paolo Pasolini was murdered.

In the second segment, Moretti goes hopping around the Italian Islands (spectacularly filmed) and tries in vain to get some writing done. Moretti's closing take is memorable. If you watch this film on its own terms, it's a wonderful viewing experience.

Moretti won the award for Best Director at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival. This film was nominated for the Grand Prix of the Belgian Syndicate of Cinema Critics.
Please notice that the screening of “Caro Diario” will start at 20:45 in order to give everybody the chance to attend the Final Residency Lecture of our friend Jan Peters, CERN artist in residence within the context of Collide@CERN, at 18:30 in the Globe.
