CERN Accelerating science

The WA98 experiment is one of the seven experiments (NA44, NA45, NA49, NA50, NA52, WA97/NA57 and WA98) involved in CERN's Heavy Ion programme which provided evidence for the existence of a new state of matter, the quark-gluon plasma. In this state, quarks, instead of being bound up into more complex particles such as protons and neutrons, are liberated and roam freely. Theory predicts that this state must have existed at about 10 microseconds after the Big Bang, before the formation of matter as we know it today.

L'expérience WA98 est une des sept expériences (NA44, NA45, NA49, NA50, NA52, WA97/NA57 and WA98) impliquée dans le programme des ions lourds au CERN et qui a présenté des preuves de l'existence d'un nouvel état de la matière, dans lequel les quarks, au lieu d'être confinés dans des particules plus complexes, comme les protons et les neutrons, sont déliés et se déplacent librement. La théorie prédit que cet état a dû exister environ 10 microsecondes après le Big Bang, avant la formation de la matière telle que nous la connaissons aujourd'hui.
