Installation of CMS EB (ECAL Barrel) Supermodules 5 and 13 inside HB+ (HCAL Barrel) on 26/27 April 2006 Ken Bell RAL Zhihong Sun CEA-Saclay 2007 The first two barrel "supermodules" of the CMS Electromagnetic Calorimeter (ECAL) have been inserted into the barrel hadron calorimeter (HCAL) in the CMS experimental hall (called SX5) in Cessy in preparation for the forthcoming magnet test and cosmic challenge (MTCC). Each of the two supermodules contains 1700 lead tungstate crystals in glass-fibre alveolar support structures, with associated avalanche photodiodes (APDs, for scintillation light detection), electronics and cooling system. LHC’s cryogenic magnet test facility 1994 This string of magnets was designed to test the cryogenic systems that will keep the LHC colder than 270 degrees below zero. The LHC’s beams will be accelerated to an energy of 7 TeV so powerful superconducting magnets must be used to hold the beams on course as they race around the giant accelerator. Several views of the new CERN Control Centre 2006 The CERN Control Centre was inaugurated on 16 March 2006 to provide a central command for CERN’s accelerators, the cryogenic distribution line and the technical infrastructure on the CERN site. There are 39 operation stations for four areas, the LHC, Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), Proton Synchrotron (PS) and technical infrastructure. At any one time the centre can accommodate up to 13 operators, each with a team of experts. PHOTOLAB

Getting around the LHC 2005 In order for technicians to get around the 27-km tunnel that houses the LHC various methods of transportation must be employed. PHOTOLAB

The first interconnection of the LHC 2005 A welder is seen making the very first interconnection between two cryomagnets for the LHC. The 1700 interconnections between superconducting magnets for the whole collider will require 123 000 separate welding and assembly operations. PHOTOLAB

First LHC magnets installed 2005 The first magnets have been installed in the LHC tunnel but are yet to be connected. Technicians must inspect the magnets before the connections are made. PHOTOLAB

One module of the ALICE photon spectrometer 2006 The first module for the ALICE photon spectrometer has been completed. Each of the five modules will contain 3584 lead-tungstate crystals, a material as transparent as ordinary silica glass but with nearly four times the density. When a high-energy particle passes through one of these crystals it will scintillate, allowing the energy of electrons, positrons and photons to be measured through the 17 920 detection channels. Combining two major ATLAS inner detector components 2006 The semiconductor tracker is inserted into the transition radiation tracker for the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. These make up two of the three major components of the inner detector. They will work together to measure the trajectories produced in the proton-proton collisions at the centre of the detector when the LHC is switched on in 2008. PHOTOLAB

Work on the ATLAS semiconductor tracker barrel 2005 Precision work is performed on the semiconductor tracker barrel of the ATLAS experiment. All work on these delicate components must be performed in a clean room so that impurities in the air, such as dust, do not contaminate the detector. The semiconductor tracker will be mounted in the barrel close to the heart of the ATLAS experiment to detect the path of particles produced in proton-proton collisions. PHOTOLAB
