ISR tunnel construction and "drinks reception"
Cermony to celebrate the completion of the major construction work on the first block of flats to be built in the housing development at Grand-Saconnex supported by the CERN Staff Insurance Scheme. The speaker from the improvised rostrum is Mr. Bloch, who spoke on behalf of the contractors engaged on the project. The gathering was also addressed by Mr. Tieche (Manager of the Staff Insurance Scheme), Mr. Jenny (the architect ) and Mr . Chavanne (Geneva Conseiller d'Etat). The buildings' address was 1,5,13-17,2-16 Chemin Taverney, Grand Saconnex 1218.

To start off, two shafts were dug down to the tunnel level, one vertically over the incoming beam line, from PS called the <i>puit génie civile</i>, or PGC, and the other PP$_{ I}$, the permanent access shaft, near the long straight section No. $_{ I}$, where the protons would enter the SPS ring. On 20 May 1973 the "mole" had burrowed its way 650 meters around the SPS tunnel.

An important element of the ''mole'' - the wagon exchanger. These wagons transported the concrete vault sections for the first lining of the 4.80m excavated tunnel and carried away the spoil.

A model of the new CERN restaurant that was built behind Mont Citron, near the Franco-Swiss border running across the site. It was scheduled to come into service before the end of 1971. Its seating capacity was to be the same as that of the present restaurant in the Main Building, and it was planned to also house a library, a discothèque and a games room.
