<dc:description>The new detector for high energy (over 20 MeV) radiation developed by the Health Physics group. Cylinders of a plastic material with a high carbon 12 content are introduced. The carbon 12 under the effect of previous exposure to high energy radiation can be converted into the radioactive isotope carbon 11 which gives off gamma rays. In the detector the cylinder acts as a scintillator revealing its own radiation. This is observed by a photomultiplier tube and recorded on punched tape. Thick walls shield against background radiation.</dc:description>

<dc:title>Health physics: studies of irradiated broad beans</dc:title>
<dc:description>Daily measurement studies were carried out at CERN over 10 days to investigate the effect of radiation on the growth of the primary root of Vicia faba prolifica longpod (by appointment to the HRH Queen Elizabeth II, specially brought over from the UK). Studies examined many different dosages and types of beam, including 400 GeV. Many other studies were done using Vicia faba roots, for instance by looking at genetic damage caused by micronuclei induction, chromosomal aberrations, etc. These roots were a good system for studying a wide range of dosages in a reproducible way.</dc:description>
