Advanced in X-ray fluorescence holography
/ Hayashi, K
X-ray fluorescence holography (XFH) can resolve 'phase problem' in crystal diffraction and therefore it provides 3D atomic images around specific elements. Since first demonstration of the XFH in 1996, view of atoms has been improved rapidly with the refinement of the hologram data collection method [...]

EXAFS-spectroscopy on synchrotron radiation beam
/ Aksenov, V L ; Tyutyunnikov, S I ; Kuzmin, A Y ; Purans, Y
In the review the basis theoretical principles of EXAFS spectroscopy are given, as one of principal directions of an absorption spectroscopy permitting with a high accuracy to gain parameters of the short-range order in multicomponent amorphous and quasi-crystal mediums. The methods of the analysis of EXAFS spectra with allowance of effects of multiply scattering are featured [...]

Probing the dynamics of quasicrystal growth using synchrotron live imaging
/ Nguyen-Thi, H ; Gastaldi, J ; Schenk, T ; Reinhart, G ; Mangelinck-Noel, N ; Cristiglio, V ; Billia, B ; Grushko, B ; H"artwig, J ; Klein, H et al.
Quasicrystals constitute a distinct class of solids as they differ both from crystals, because they are not periodic, and from glasses, because they have long-range orientation order. [...]

Tuning efficiency and sensitivity of guided resonances in photonic crystals and quasi-crystals: A comparative study
/ Pisco, Marco ; Ricciardi, Armando ; Gallina, Ilaria ; Castaldi, Giuseppe ; Campopiano, Stefania ; Cutolo, Antonello ; Cusano, Andrea ; Galdi, Vincenzo
In this paper, we present a comparative study of the tuning efficiency and sensitivity of guided resonances (GRs) in photonic crystal (PC) holed slabs based on periodic and aperiodically-ordered unit cells, aimed at assessing the applicability of these important technology platforms to ultra-compact optical sensors and active devices. Disordered, Quasicrystalline and Crystalline Phases of Densely Packed Tetrahedra
/ Haji-Akbari, Amir ; Engel, Michael ; Keys, Aaron S ; Zheng, Xiaoyu ; Petschek, Rolfe G ; Palffy-Muhoray, Peter ; Glotzer, Sharon C
All hard, convex shapes are conjectured by Ulam to pack more densely than spheres, which have a maximum packing fraction of {\phi} = {\pi}/\sqrt18 ~ 0.7405. For many shapes, simple lattice packings easily surpass this packing fraction. [...]

Photonic band gap in isotropic hyperuniform disordered solids with low dielectric contrast
/ Man, Weining ; Florescu, Marian ; Matsuyama, Kazue ; Yadak, Polin ; Nahal, Geev ; Hashemizad, Seyed ; Williamson, Eric ; Steinhardt, Paul ; Torquato, Salvatore ; Chaikin, Paul
We report the first experimental demonstration of a TE-polarization photonic band gap (PBG) in a 2D isotropic hyperuniform disordered solid (HUDS) made of dielectric media with a index contrast of 1.6:1, very low for PBG formation. The solid is composed of a connected network of dielectric walls enclosing air-filled cells. [...]

Correlation-enhanced Friedel oscillations in amorphous alloys and quasicrystals
/ Kroha, J
We show that quantum correlations induced by electron-electron interactions in the presence of random impurity scattering can play an important role in the thermal stabilization of amorphous Hume-Rothery systems: When there is strong backscattering off local, concentrical ion clusters, the static electron density response $\chi (0,q)$ acquires a powerlaw divergence at $q=2k_F$ even at elevated temperature. This leads to an enhancement as well as to a systematical phase shift of the Friedel oscillations, both consistent with experiments. [...]

Stability of a hard-sphere binary quasicrystal
/ Cataldo, H M
The stability of a quasicrystalline structure, recently obtained in a molecular-dynamics simulation of rapid cooling of a binary melt, is analyzed for binary hard-sphere mixtures within a density-functional approach. It is found that this quasicrystal is metastable relative to crystalline and fluid phases for diameter ratios above 0.83. [...]

Lyapunov exponent for pure and random Fibonacci chains
/ Velhinho, M T ; Pimentel, I R
We study the Lyapunov exponent for electron and phonon excitations, in pure and random Fibonacci quasicrystal chains, using an exact real space renormalization group method, which allows the calculation of the Lyapunov exponent as a function of the energy. It is shown that the Lyapunov exponent on a pure Fibonacci chain has a self-similar structure, characterized by a scaling index that is independent of the energy for the electron excitations, ''diagonal'' or ''off-diagonal'' quasiperiodic, but is a function of the energy for the phonon excitations. [...]

A photonic thermalization gap in disordered lattices
/ Kondakci, H E ; Abouraddy, A F ; Saleh, B E A
The formation of gaps -- forbidden ranges in the values of a physical parameter -- is a ubiquitous feature of a variety of physical systems: from energy bandgaps of electrons in periodic lattices and their analogs in photonic, phononic, and plasmonic systems to pseudo energy gaps in aperiodic quasicrystals. Here, we report on a `thermalization' gap for light propagating in finite disordered structures characterized by disorder-immune chiral symmetry -- the appearance of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors in skew-symmetric pairs.
