    <subfield code="a">The main lattice of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will employ about 1600 main magnets and more than 4000 corrector magnets. All superconducting and working in pressurized superfluid helium bath, these impressive line of magnets will fill more than 20 km of the underground tunnel. With almost 70 main dipoles already delivered and 10 main quadrupoles almost completed, we passed the 5% of the production and now all manufacturers have fully entered into series production. In this paper the most critical issues encountered in the ramping up in such a real large scale fabrication will be addressed: uniformity of the coil size and of prestress, special welding technique, tolerances on curvature (dipoles) or straightness (quadrupoles) and of the cold mass extremities, harmonic content and, most important, the integrated field uniformity among magnets. The actual limits and the solution for improvements will be discussed. Finally a realistic schedule based on actual achievements is presented.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">Individually powered superconducting quadrupoles with a coil bore of 70 mm will be installed in the LHC insertions, in areas where increased geometrical acceptance and improved field quality are required. The quadrupoles feature a four-layer coil, designed on the basis of two graded 8.3 mm wide Rutherford-type NbTi cables. The magnets have a magnetic length of 3.4 m and a nominal gradient of 160 T/m at 4.5 K and 3610 A. A total of 26 quadrupoles are in production at ACCEL Instruments (Germany). In this report we present the experience in fabrication of the pre-series magnets and the results of the initial qualification tests.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">During beam injection the components of the magnetic field inside the magnets decay in time. At the re-start of the ramping, this decay is cancelled resulting in a fast change of the harmonics called "snapback". This sudden variation affects mainly the sextupole and decapole components and can induce significant changes in the machine chromaticity, thus causing particle beam loss. Standard magnetic measurements with rotating coils do not have a sufficient time resolution to properly characterize the snapback phenomenon. A system based on Hall probes has been developed from an existing prototype to measure with a moderate acquisition frequency (3-10 Hz) the decay and snapback of the sextupole- and, for the first time, of the decapole fields. The present system also provides local measurements of these field harmonics along a wavelength of the superconducting cable twist pitch. In this paper, we describe the assembly features of this detector and of the measurement chain. The performances are demonstrated based on preliminary measurements performed on the LHC pre-series dipoles in operating conditions.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) String programme has focussed over the years the efforts of many teams that have tested and validated their systems under operating conditions close to the final ones in the LHC machine tunnel and underground areas. During the various phases while commissioning or performing dedicated experiments, the Quench Protection System (QPS) has been tested and improved. A large variety of designs of the QPS equipment have been validated. The experience gained, especially concerning both the commissioning and the interaction with systems working within close interfaces (interlocks, powering, controls), is a valuable expertise to undertake the LHC challenge. In the LHC, the QPS will be the only system monitoring and protecting the superconducting elements: the integrity of all the superconducting magnets, bus bars and high-Tc superconducting current leads will depend on its reliable operation. A description of the system installed in String 2 will be given together with the principal similarities and differences with respect to the equipment planned for installation in the LHC. The key experimental results will be explained.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">In the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), two straight sections, IR3 and IR7, will be dedicated to beam cleaning. These cleaning insertions will be equipped with normal conducting magnets. MBW magnets are dipole magnets used to increase the separation of the two beams. They have a core length of 3.4 m and a gap height of 52 mm and will operate at a magnetic field ranging from 0.09 T to 1.53 T. Limitations on the dimensions and total weight of the magnet resulted in a special design with a common yoke for the two beams. The orbits of the two beams will be separated horizontally by a distance between 194 mm and 224 mm in the gap of the magnet. The magnet was designed in collaboration between CERN and BINP. The report presents the main design issues and results of the pre-series acceptance tests including mechanical, electrical and magnetic field measurements.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">The LHC insertions are equipped with several different types of individually powered superconducting quadrupoles. These units comprise several quadrupole magnets and orbit correctors, and range in length from 5.3 m to 11.3 m. In spite of the variety of types and interface requirements, the design of the quadrupoles is based on the same principle where two welded half-shells provide the rigidity and alignment of the magnets and serve as a helium pressure vessel. In this paper we present the mechanical design of the LHC insertion quadrupoles, describe the initial experience in the assembly of the pre-series units, and report on the alignment measurements.</subfield>

The quadrupoles feature a 56 mm aperture coil, designed on the basis of an 8.8 mm wide Rutherford-type NbTi cable for a nominal gradient of 200 T/m at 1.9 K and 5390 A. A total of 96 quadrupoles are in production in Tesla Engineering, UK. In this report we describe the construction of the pre-series MQM quadrupoles and present the results of the qualification tests.</subfield>

The various functions of the insertions are fulfilled by a variety of magnet systems, most of them based on the technology of NbTi superconductors cooled by superfluid helium at 1.9 K. In this paper, we review the concepts underlying the design of the LHC insertions, and describe the corresponding design of the various specialized magnet systems. A status of the procurement of the magnets is given, and plans for their installation and commissioning reviewed.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be equipped with a large number (6400) of superconducting corrector magnets. These magnets are powerful, with typical peak fields of 3-4 T on the coils, but at the same time compact and of low cost. There are many types: sextupoles, octupoles and decapoles to correct the main dipole field, dipoles, quadrupoles, sextupoles and octupoles to condition the proton beams and several nested correctors from dipole to dodecapole in the inner triplets. The sizes vary from 6 kg, 110 mm long, nested decapole-octupole spool pieces to 1800 kg, 1.4m long, trim quadrupoles. The fabrication of the 11 different types of magnets is assured by 10 contracts placed at 6 firms, two of which are in India. A number of magnets are now in series production, others in their pre-series production. The paper describes the present state of the fabrication and the testing of these magnets.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">In order to provide the necessary mechanical aperture for the LHC beam, the main dipole cold masses have to match precisely the nominal circular trajectory of the particles beam. The requirements on the dipole cold mass geometry are dictated by the LHC beam optics and by the allowed limits of mechanical deformation of the interconnection bellows. Keeping the tight tolerances that are imposed necessitates a well controlled bending process and the use of a high accuracy 3D measuring instrument for checking the geometry of the cold mass throughout many manufacturing stages up to the final inspection. The dipole cold mass pre-series production started in 2000. It is almost completed at the three sites. In this paper, we report on the problems encountered to shape correctly the cold masses, their effect on interconnection of the dipole cold masses and on the mechanical aperture. On one side measures to improve the production process in terms of accuracy and reproducibility were taken, on the other side the assembly tolerances could be relaxed following a thorough review of the machine requirements. The summary of the encountered problems, corrective actions and results obtained on the pre-series cold masses are presented and discussed.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">A full-scale and fully-instrumented working model of the LHC lattice cell has been tested at CERN between March and December 2002. Aside of the current, pressure and temperature sensors, controlled by an industrial supervision system, a novel device has been set to monitor magnet positions with respect to the surrounding cryostat. The series of operating modes to test cryogenics, current leads and quench recovery electronics offered the chance to investigate potentially harmful deformations of the superconducting structure. In this paper we present a survey of displacements and deformations experienced by the LHC cell magnets during thermal cycles, current ramps and resistive transitions. Although the system complexity prevented from complete modeling, a preliminary phenomena explanation is given.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">The preseries production of the LHC main superconducting dipoles is presently being tested at CERN. The foremost features of these magnets are: twin structure, six block two layer coils wound from 15.1 mm wide graded NbTi cables, 56 mm aperture, polyimide insulation and stainless steel collars. This paper reviews the main test results of magnets tested to day in both normal and superfluid helium. The results of the training performance, magnet protection, electrical integrity and the field quality are presented in terms of the specifications and expected performance of these magnets in the future accelerator.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">More than 470 twin aperture lattice quadrupoles are needed for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) under construction at CERN. The lattice quadrupole, assembled with correction magnets in its helium enclosure - the cold mass and integrated in a common cryostat called the Short Straight Section (SSS). All SSS cold mass prototypes have been developed and built by CEA (Saclay) in collaboration with CNRS (Orsay, France). The last SSS prototype (SSS5) was used to investigate the behavior of the magnetic axis through various steps of the installation cycle for the series quadrupoles: including transportation, thermal-cycles, and being lowered into the tunnel. Results of extensive measurements before and after each of these stages are presented here, showing that the effect of transport is weak and within the window of measurement resolution. Also shown is that the long-term stability observed during two years is comparable with the requirements from magnet tolerances. To minimize systematic errors, all tests were performed with two independent measurement systems: Single-Stretched Wire (SSW) and Automated Scanner. A brief description of these systems is given, concentrating mostly on their accuracies. In addition, establishment of a reliable cold - warm correlation for the magnetic axis position is a very important issue because it can reduce the percentage of cold tests. Though this correlation will be based on proper statistics at the beginning of series production, magnetic axis behavior during thermal-cycle has been investigated for the SSS5 prototype, and these results are also presented.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) [1], a proton-proton superconducting accelerator, will consist of about 8400 superconducting magnet units, all operating in superfluid helium at a temperature of 1.9 K. The design of the superconducting main dipole magnets for the LHC is guided by the requirement of an extremely high field quality in the magnet aperture which is mainly defined by the layout of the superconducting coil and the position of the conductors. In order to avoid conductor movements within the magnet cross-section, the superconducting coils are held in place by surrounding stainless steel collars. In this paper, we review the dependence of field harmonics in the LHC main dipoles on dimensions of the hardware components of the collared coils. An analysis of the dimensional measurements of these compo-nents which are used in the collared coils produced so far is given. Sensitivity tables which are worked out through a coupled magneto-static model give the variation of the multipoles on collars, copper wedge dimensions and cable geometry. A Monte Carlo method is used to simulate the effects of possible errors on the multipoles.</subfield>

In this paper we compare the measured field quality to beam dynamics targets using correlations to measurements at 1.9 K. The present status of field quality is given and corrective actions carried out to center field quality on optimal values are presented. Differences among the three manufacturers are analysed, and the main results that concern correlation between cold and warm measurements are outlined. Present trends in the production and open points are discussed.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">In this paper we review the tools used for controlling the production of the LHC main dipoles through warm magnetic measurements. For the collared coil measurements, control limits are based on the statistics relative to the pre-series production. For the cold mass, the difference between collared coil and cold mass is considered, allowing a very stringent test. In both cases, measurements are split in straight part average, variations and coil ends contributions. Two different alarm levels exist in case the measured field is out of limits. The analysis can be carried out at the manufacturer and allows detection of anomalies in the measured magnetic field. These can be either due to wrong measurements or caused by assembly defects. Techniques used to work out information on the magnet assembly from the field harmonics are outlined. We summarize the experience gathered on about 180 collared coils and 120 cold masses, pointing out the bad cases and investigating the reliability of the measurements.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">The LHC main dipoles are assembled relying heavily on welding technology. In particular, two 15 m long longitudinal MAG welds along the shrinking cylinder, manufactured from AISI 316 LN stainless steel plates, close the cold mass and are submitted to tensile stress. The welds have to feature a design load of 350 MPa at 1.8 K and to guarantee the leak tightness to superfluid helium. Starting from few available experimental data, the reliability of the cold mass welds in terms of fracture mechanics is studied under different hypotheses (i. e. presence of surface or embedded flaws). The analysis has been carried out using a wide range of different approaches, such as Leak before break, LCF (Low Cycle Fatigue), LEFM (Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics) and established standards (WES 2805). Also different approaches of propagation under fatigue are compared. The results of this study are meant to prove the robustness and reliability of the design at the working temperature of the magnets.</subfield>

Implications of aligning out-of-tolerance dipoles by the extremities are also discussed.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">Considerable effort is spent at CERN on magnetic alignment measurements of main lattice LHC dipoles, including field direction, curved axis shape and position of in-built correctors, essential to verify the geometry of the assembly and to guarantee correct installation w.r.t. the reference beam orbit. The current baseline includes measurements of a statistically relevant percentage of cold masses and cryostated magnets before, during and after cryogenic tests. For this, we use a range of scanning probes based either on harmonic coils or fixed coils in AC mode, with laser and telescope trackers to measure position w.r.t. cryostat fiducials. The dipole is usually powered in "quadrupole mode" to create a convenient magnetic reference. In this paper, we first recall objectives, equipment and methods. Then, we report the status of the test activities, showing results obtained on the first pre-series dipoles, including cross-checks of various measurement systems and correlation between measurements at room and cryogenic temperatures.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">Premature training quenches are usually caused by the transient energy release within the magnet coil as it is energised. The dominant disturbances originate in cable motion and produce observable rapid variation in voltage signals called spikes. The experimental set up and the raw data treatment to detect these phenomena are briefly recalled. The statistical properties of different features of spikes are presented like for instance the maximal amplitude, the energy, the duration and the time correlation between events. The parameterisation of the mechanical activity of magnets is addressed. The mechanical activity of full-scale prototype and first preseries LHC dipole magnets is analysed and correlations with magnet manufacturing procedures and quench performance are established. The predictability of the quench occurrence is discussed and examples presented.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">From the standpoint of overall conductor cost, it is desirable to minimize the amount of Cu that is co-processed with the superconductor during strand fabrication. We are investigating several approaches for fabricating multistrand cables in which the Cu is added at the final, i.e. cabling, stage of manufacture. These include mixed strand Rutherford-type cables with pure Cu strands cabled together with superconductor strands that have a low volume fraction of Cu, Cu added as a core to a Rutherford-type cable, and Cu strip added to the surface of the cable. Results on fabrication of several alternate types of Nb$_{3}$Sn cables are presented. The more promising types of mixed strand and cored cables are being evaluated in short sample and small magnet tests. These results will be presented and the performance will be compared with conventional Rutherford cables where the Cu is an integral component of the superconductor strand.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">The QTG quadrupole magnets will be a part of the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso (CNGS) transfer line. 23 QTG magnets will be used as lattice and matching quadrupoles. They are being produced in the framework of a German in-kind contribution via DESY to CNGS. The QTG magnets have a maximum gradient of 40 T/m at the 530 A excitation current and are manufactured from laminated steel cores. The yoke length is 2.2 m and the inscribed radius is 22.5 mm. The excitation coils are made of vacuum impregnated hollow copper conductor. The main design aspects and the results of the acceptance tests including mechanical, electrical and magnetic field measurements are described.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">ATLAS is one of the two major experiments of the LHC project at CERN using cryogenics. The superconducting magnet system of ATLAS is composed of the Barrel Toroid (BT), two End Caps Toroids and the Central Solenoid. The BT is formed of 8 race-track superconducting dipoles, each one 25 m long and 5 m wide. A reduced scale prototype (named B0) of one of the 8 dipoles, about one third of the length, has been constructed and tested in a dedicated cryogenic facility at CERN. To simulate the final thermal and hydraulic operating conditions, the B0 was cooled by a forced flow of 4.5 K saturated liquid helium provided by a centrifugal pump of 80 g/s nominal capacity. Both static and dynamic heat loads, generated by the induced currents on the B0 casing during a slow dump or a ramp up, have been measured to verify the expected thermal budget of the entire BT. The instrument used for the heat load measurements was a Void Fraction Meter (VFM) installed on the magnet return line. The instrument constructed at CERN was calibrated in order to provide direct readings of heat loads. An example of application of the VFM measuring method to a largescale apparatus cooled at liquid helium temperature.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">The LHC magnet R&amp;D program has shown that the limit of NbTi technology at 1.9 K was in the 10-to-10.5-T range. Hence, to go beyond the 10-T threshold, it is necessary to change the superconducting material. Given the state of the art in HTS, the only serious candidate is Nb$_{3}$Sn. A series of dipole magnet models built at Twente University and LBNL as well as a vigorous program carried out at Fermilab have demonstrated the feasibility of Nb$_{3}$Sn magnet technology. The next step is to bring this technology to maturity, which require further conductor and conductor insulation development and a simplification of manufacturing processes. After a brief history, we review ongoing R&amp;D programs in Europe and we present the Next European Dipole (NED) initiative promoted by the European Steering Group on Accelerator R&amp;D (ESGARD).</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">Two MNP-23 septum-like magnets are installed at CERN in the transfer line from the Proton Synchrotron (PS) to the East Hall Experimental Area. They are exposed to extremely high doses of ionizing radiation. In the past, the magnets experienced two catastrophic failures due to overheating of its coils and cannot be repaired. The magnets of improved design which is subject of this article are built as replacements for the magnets presently installed. The MNP-23 is a resistive C shaped iron-dominated magnet made of solid low carbon steel blocks. The excitation windings consist of two water-cooled coils wound from hollow copper conductor. The septum design of these magnets implies a high current density which requires an efficient water cooling system. The newly designed cooling circuit provides better cooling performance and more reliability. To avoid failures due to coil overheating, an elaborate interlock system was developed and installed. It consists of two parts: firstly a slow, more classic sensor, to detect gradual water blockages and inlet cooling water temperature rises and secondly a fast response device to detect sudden loss of water cooling due to external leaks or sudden blockage of one of the water cooling circuits in the coil. The article outlines the unusual and challenging design of the magnet and its interlock system and describes the hardware as well as its performance.</subfield>

    <subfield code="a">A new helium refrigeration plant with a cooling capacity of 800 W at 4.45 K, 4500 W between 60 K and 80 K, and 4 g/s liquefaction simultaneously has been installed in its temporary position inside the Compact Muon Solenoid assembly hall at CERN. The commissioning of the compressor station has been achieved, the commissioning of the cold box and the cryostats is under way. First operation results are presented.</subfield>
