These goals are achieved with a trigger composed of three sequential levels of increasing accuracy that have to reduce the output event rate down to ~ 100 Hz. This work focuses on muon reconstruction and identification for the third level (Event Filter), for which specific algorithms from the off-line environment have been adapted to work in the trigger framework. Its primary function is the reduction of data flow and rate to values acceptable by the mass storage operations and by the subsequent off-line data reconstruction and analysis steps. The computing instrument of the EF is generally organized as a set of independent sub-farms, each connected to one output of the Event Builder switch fabric. Each sub-farm comprises a number of processors analyzing several complete events in parallel. This paper describes the design of the ATLAS EF system, its deployment in the 2004 ATLAS combined test beam together with some examples of integrating selection and monitoring algorithms. Since the processing algorithms are not specially designed for EF but are inherited as much as possible from the off-line ones, special emphasis is reserved to system reliability and data security, in particular for the case of failures in the processing algorithms. The trigger must efficiently select interesting events while rejecting the large amount of background. The First Level trigger will reduce this rate to around $O(75$ kHz $)$. Subsequently, the High Level Trigger (HLT), comprising the Second Level trigger and the Event Filter, will reduce this rate by a factor of $O(10^3)$. Triggering on taus is important for Higgs and SUSY searches at the LHC. In this paper tau trigger selections are presented based on a lepton trigger if the tau decays leptonically or via a dedicated tau hadron trigger if the tau disintegrates semileptonically. The Level-1, implemented with custom hardware, identifies physics objects within Regions of Interests and operates a first reduction of the event rate to 75 KHz. The higher trigger levels provide a software based event selection which further reduces the event rate to about 100 Hz. This paper presents the algorithm (muFast) employed at Level-2 to confirm the muon candidates flagged by the Level-1. muFast identifies hits of muon tracks inside the Muon Spectrometer and provides a precise measurement of the muon momentum at the production vertex. The algorithm must process the Level-1 muon output rate (~20 KHz), thus a particular care has been used for its optimization. The result is a very fast track reconstruction algorithm with good physics performances which, in some cases, approach those of the offline reconstruction: it computes the pT of prompt muons with a resolution of 5.5% at 6 GeV and 4.0% at 20 GeV and with an efficiency of about 95%. For the others, we calculate the amount of time per event that could be allocated to run these not-yet-finalized algorithms. This high number of PCs will only be purchased before data taking in 2007. The large CERN IT LXBATCH facility provided the opportunity to run in July 2005 online functionality tests over a period of 5 weeks on a stepwise increasing farm size from 100 up to 700 PC dual nodes. The interplay between the control and monitoring software with the event readout, event building and the trigger software has been exercised the first time as an integrated system on this large scale. New was also to run algorithms in the online environment for the trigger selection and in the event filter processing tasks on a larger scale. A mechanism has been developed to package the offline software together with the DAQ/HLT software and to distribute it via peer-to-peer software efficiently to this large pc cluster. The findings obtained during the tests lead to many immediate improvements in the software. Trend analysis allowed identifying critical areas. This high number of PCs will only be purchased before data taking in 2007. The large CERN IT LXBATCH facility provided the opportunity to run in July 2005 online functionality tests over a period of 5 weeks on a stepwise increasing farm size from 100 up to 700 PC dual nodes. The interplay between the control and monitoring software with the event readout, event building and the trigger software has been exercised the first time as an integrated system on this large scale. New was also to run algorithms in the online environment for the trigger selection and in the event filter processing tasks on a larger scale. A mechanism has been developed to package the offline software together with the DAQ/HLT software and to distribute it via peer-to-peer software efficiently to this large pc cluster. An extremely flexible solution is proposed that allows for early rejection of unwanted events and an easily configurable way to choose algorithms and to specify the criteria for trigger decisions. It is implemented in the standard ATLAS object-oriented software framework, Athena. The early rejection is achieved by breaking the decision process down into sequential steps. The configuration of each step defines sequences of algorithms which should be used to process the data, and 'trigger menus' that define which physics signatures must be satisfied to continue on to the next step, and ultimately to accept the event. A navigation system has been built on top of the standard Athena transient store (StoreGate) to link the event data together in a tree-like structure. This is fundamental to the seeding mechanism, by which data from one step is presented to the next. The level-1 trigger, implemented in a custom hardware, will reduce the initial rate to 75 kHz and is followed by the software based level-2 and Event Filter, usually referred as High Level Triggers (HLT), which further reduce the rate to about 100 Hz. In this paper an overview of the implementation of the offline muon recostruction algortihms MOORE (Muon Object Oriented REconstruction) and MuId (Muon Identification) as Event Filter in the ATLAS online framework is given. The MOORE algorithm performs the reconstruction inside the Muon Spectrometer providing a precise measurement of the muon track parameters outside the calorimeters; MuId combines the measurements of all ATLAS sub-detectors in order to identify muons and provides the best estimate of their momentum at the production vertex. The LVL2 trigger starts from LVL1 information concerning pointers to restricted so-called Regions of Interest (ROI) and performs event selection by means of optimized algorithms. If the LVL2 is passed, the full event is built and sent to the Event Filter (EF) algorithms for further selection and classification. After that, events are finally collected and put into mass storage for subsequent physics analysis. Even if many differences arise in the requirements and in the interfaces between the two HLT stages, they have a coherent approach to event selection. Therefore, the design of a common core software framework has been implemented in order to allow the HLT architecture to be flexible to changes (background conditions, luminosity, description of the detector, etc.). Algorithms working in the Event Filter are designed to work not only in a general purpose or exclusive mode, but they have been implemented in such a way to process given trigger hypotheses produced at a previous stage in the HLT dataflow. This is done by acting in separate steps, so that decisions to go further in the process are taken at every new step. An overview of the HLT processing steps is given and the working principles of the EF offline algorithms for muon reconstruction and identification (MOORE and MuId) are discussed in deeper detail. The Event Filter (EF) is the third level trigger and is software implemented. Its primary goal is the final selection of interesting events with reduction of the event rate down to ~200 Hz acceptable by the mass storage. The EF System will be implemented as a set of independent commodity components Sub-Farms, each connected to the Event Builder subsystem to receive full events and on the other side to the Sub-Farm Output nodes, where the selected events are forwarded to mass storage. A distinctive feature of the Event Filter is its ability to use the full event data for selection directly based on the offline reconstruction and analysis algorithms. Besides the main duties on event triggering and data transportation, the EF is also able to provide additional functionalities, like monitoring of the selected events and online calibration of the ATLAS detectors. Significant design improvements are currently under development to provide these additional functionalities to the EF System. The Event Filter was deployed and tested in data triggering at the ATLAS Combined Test Beam at CERN in 2004. The EF is also subject to various tests on dedicated test-bed computer clusters, where both the EF functionalities and performance are studied. Special tests are being done when running the EF software components on the large-scale EF Farms, with hundreds of computers. For the muon events, the selection is decomposed in a number of broad steps: first, the Muon Spectrometer data are processed to give physics quantities associated to the muon track (standalone feature extraction) then, other detector data are used to refine the extracted features. The “µFast” algorithm performs the standalone feature extraction, providing a first reduction of the muon event rate from Level-1. It confirms muon track candidates with a precise measurement of the muon momentum. The algorithm is designed to be both conceptually simple and fast so as to be readily implemented in the demanding online environment in which the Level-2 selection code will run. Never-the-less its physics performance approaches, in some cases, that of the offline reconstruction algorithms. The High-Level Trigger (HLT = second level trigger and Event Filter), which is a software based trigger will need to reduce the level-1 output rate of ~75 kHz to ~200 Hz written out to mass storage. In this talk an overview of the current physics and system performance of the HLT selection for electrons and photons is given. The performance has been evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations and has been partly demonstrated in the ATLAS testbeam in 2004. The efficiency for the signal channels, the rate expected for the selection, the global data preparation and execution times will be highlighted. For ATLAS, a three level trigger system has been developed to extract interesting physics signatures with a 10^6 rate reduction. To accomplish this, components of physics analysis traditionally deferred to offline physics analysis must be embedded within the online trigger system. For the Muon trigger, the specific off-line algorithms MOORE (Muon Object Oriented REconstruction) and MuId (Muon Identification) have been adopted so far for the on-line use, imposing an operation in a Bayesian-like environment where only specific hypotheses must be validated. The First Level trigger will reduce this rate to around O(100 kHz). Subsequently, the High Level Trigger (HLT), which is comprised of the Second Level trigger and the Event Filter, will need to further reduce this rate by a factor of O(10^3). The HLT selection is software based and will be implemented on commercial CPUs, using a common framework built on the standard ATLAS object oriented software architecture. In this paper an overview of the current implementation of the selection for electrons and photons in the HLT is given. The performance of this implementation has been evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations in terms of the efficiency for the signal channels, rate expected for the selection, data preparation times, and algorithm execution times. Besides the efficiency and rate estimates, some physics examples will be discussed, showing that the triggers are well adapted for the physics programme envisaged at LHC. In a large experiment, like ATLAS, the online data acquisition system is distributed across the nodes of large farms, each of them running several processes that analyse a fraction of the events. In this architecture, it is necessary to have a central process that collects all the monitoring data from the different nodes, produces full statistics histograms and analyses them. In this paper we present the design of such a system, called the gatherer. It allows to collect any monitoring object, such as histograms, from the farm nodes, from any process in the DAQ, trigger and reconstruction chain. It also adds up the statistics, if required, and processes user defined algorithms in order to analyse the monitoring data. The results are sent to a centralized display, that shows the information online, and to the archiving system, triggering alarms in case of problems. The innovation of this system is that conceptually it abstracts several underlying communication protocols, being able to talk with different processes using different protocols at the same time and, therefore, providing maximum flexibility. The software is easily adaptable to any trigger-DAQ system. The first prototype of the gathering system has been implemented for ATLAS and has been running during this year's combined test beam. The ATLAS Second Level Trigger is original in several ways. It makes use of information provided by the First Level Trigger which identifies Regions of Interest (RoI) indicating where the most significant activity has occurred within the detector. Accessing detector data in RoIs only reduces the estimated 100 Gbytes/s data rate by a factor 100. Appart from a custom interface to acquire the RoI information, the Second Level Trigger is implemented in software. Another cost saving approach is the development of Trigger Selection software in an offline environment using a common framework for the High Level Trigger and Reconstruction Software. Consequently, the Second Level Trigger draws on software developed in two largely independant domains: real time oriented dataflow software combined with offline selection software. In this paper we report on experience gained and results obtained with second generation prototype software of both domains. Test of the performance of the data collection have been carried out on testbeds consisting of PCs running Linux and interconnected by Gbit Ethernet switches. This filtering of events is organized in two levels: the second level trigger and the event filter. Both levels are referred together as High Level Trigger (HLT). A coherent approach to event selection across the HLT has been taken. Thus a common core software framework has been designed to maximise the usage of offline interfaces and software components, whilst allowing sufficient flexibility to meet the different interfaces and requirements of the two different levels, notably those of performance and robustness. It is composed of two stages, the LVL2 trigger and the Event Filter. The HLT is implemented as software tasks running on large processor farms. An essential part of the HLT is the supervision system, which is responsible for configuring, coordinating, controlling and monitoring the many hundreds of processes running in the HLT. A prototype implementation of the supervision system, using tools from the ATLAS Online Software system is presented. The LVL2 trigger performs event selection with optimized algorithms using selected data guided by Region of Interest pointers provided by the LVL1 trigger. Those events selected by LVL2, are built into complete events, which are passed to the EF for a further stage of event selection and classification using off-line algorithms. Events surviving the EF selection are passed for off-line storage. The two stages of HLT are implemented on processor farms. The concept of distributing the selection process between LVL2 and EF is a key element in the architecture, which allows it to be flexible to changes (luminosity, detector knowledge, background conditions etc.) Although there are some differences in the requirements between these sub-systems there are many commonalities. An overview of the dataflow (event selection) and supervision (control, configuration, monitoring) activities in the HLT is given, highlighting where commonalities between the two sub-systems can be exploited and indicating where requirements dictate that implementations differ. Starting from the bunch-crossing rate of 40 MHz (an interaction rate of 1 GHz at design luminosity-~ 10/sup 34 / cm/sup -2/s/sup -1/), the first level trigger (LVL1) will reduce the rate to about 75 kHz using purpose-built hardware. An additional factor of about 10/sup 3/ in rate reduction is to be provided by the high-level triggers (HLTs) system, with two main functional components: the second-level trigger (LVL2) and the event filter(EF). LVL2 has to provide a fast decision (guided by the information from LVL1), using only a fraction of the full event, however, already at full granularity and can combine all subdetectors. At the EF, a refined selection is made with the. capability of full event reconstruction and the use of detailed calibration and alignment parameters. The HLT software architecture will provide a common and rather "lightweight" framework, able to execute the various selection algorithms and to control the sequence of execution according to the event properties and configuration parameters. System flexibility is a strong requirement in order to adapt to changes, e.g., in luminosity and background conditions. This paper will present the approach chosen for the software design of the HLT selection framework and of the algorithm interface, giving examples for selection sequences and algorithms. The Symmetric Multi Processor (SMP) implementation of the Event Filter is attractive because it offers advantages in data sharing and transfer between the different hardware and software components. In order to achieve a better exploitation of the hardware resources the sub-farm code has been implemented as a single multi-threaded process, complying to Posix 1003.1c standard. Several tests have been performed in order to measure the global throughput of the sub-farm and to check the software and hardware characteristics. All the results obtained until now indicate that the hardware and software architectures do not limit the behaviour of the sub-farm. There have been a series of technical runs using the final components of the system already installed in the experimental area. Various tests have been run including ones where level 1 preselected simulated proton-proton events have been processed in a loop mode through the trigger and dataflow chains. The system included the readout buffers containing the events, event building, level 2 and event filter trigger algorithms. The scalability of the system with respect to the number of event building nodes used has been studied and quantities critical for the final system, such as trigger rates and event processing times, have been measured using different trigger algorithms as well as different TDAQ components.
