The design and construction of the ALICE dipole magnet has been co-ordinated within the LEA group. Several teams from collaborating institutes and design and engineering resources from CERN participated in the project. The construction of the different main components was entrusted to industry in several countries. The paper highlights some of the major design features and engineering solutions. The requirements for a full preassembly are explained and the assembly procedure as well as the status of the project are summarized.

A large Dipole Magnet is required for the Muon Arm spectrometer of the ALICE experiment[1,2]. The main parameters and basic design options of the dipole magnet have been described in [3]. The coils of the magnet will be wound from hollow Aluminium conductor of 50x50 mm² cross-section with a 30 mm diameter cooling hole in the centre. Different manufacturing techniques may be envisaged for the fabrication of the excitation coils. In this note we propose a procedure to construct the coils from straight extruded bars of half turn length. The different steps necessary to bend a half turn are described. A method to form complete turns, pancakes and the total coil is explained. A possible insulation process is presented.
Advantages and critical areas of the coil construction process are highlighted in the conclusions.
References
[1]ALICE TP, CERN/LHCC 95-71
[2]ALICE TP Addendum, CERN/LHCC 96-32
[3]A Warm Magnet for the ALICE Muon Arm, ALICE 96/24, W.Flegel, D.Swoboda, CERN

List of Figures

Figure 1 Coil Assembly
Figure 2 1st bend type B
Figure 3 2nd bend type B
Figure 4 Upward bend type A
Figure 5 Inward bend type A
Figure 6 Single turn assembly
</abstract>

    <abstract>

Abstract

The aim of this project was to develop an OPC server to communicate over an RS232 serial line. This communication media is commonly used with commercial instruments. The development was made for a High Voltage power supply in the context of the Alice [1] experiment. In addition, the structured modular concept will allow changing the transmission media or power supply type with little effort. The high voltage power supply should be accessible remotely through a network.
OPC[2] is an acronym for OLE[3] for Process Control. OPC is based on the DCOM [3] communication protocol, which allows communication with any computer running a Windows based OS. This standard is widely used in industry to access device data through Windows applications. The concept is based on the client-server architecture.
The hardware and the software architecture are described. Subsequently details of the implemented programs are given with emphasis on the possibility to replace parts of the software in order to use different communication systems and/or power supplies of different type or from other manufacturers. The BridgeView [4] application, which acts as OPC client is also described.

</abstract>

The sub-detectors and systems in the ALICE experiment [1] are of various types. However, during physics runs, all devices necessary for the operation of the detector must be accessible and controllable through a common computer interface. Throughout all other periods each sub-detector requires maintenance, upgrading or test operation. To this end, an access independant of other sub-detectors must be guaranteed. These basic requirements impose a fair number of constraints on the architecture and components of the Detector Control System (DCS).
The purpose of the TESt project consisted in the construction of a stand alone unit for a specific sub-system of an ALICE detector in order to gain first experience with commercial products for detector control. Although the control system includes only a small number of devices and is designed for a particular application, it covers nevertheless all layers of a complete system and can be extended or used in different applications.
The control system prototype has been implemented for the Perfluorohexane (C6F14) liquid distribution of the ALICE-HMPID (High-Momentum Particle IDentification)[5]. The application has been developed exclusively with components off the shelf: National Instruments BridgeVIEW [6] supervision software, SIEMENS PLC S7-300 [7] and the programming tool STEP 7. The OPC standard (OLE for Process Control) [8] was used for the communication between BridgeVIEW and the PLC.

We propose here several methods and describe tests that were performed to estimate tolerances and forces which will have to be expected during the manufacturing process. To this end, short Aluminium conductor lengths of adequate cross-section were bent around a shaper piece to an angle of 90 degrees. The tests were repeated for conductors both wrapped with prepreg insulation tape and without this tape. The different test set-ups and the obtained results are described in this note.

</abstract>

The purpose of this document is to provide the user requirements for a detector control system kernel for the LHC experiments following the ESA standard PSS-05 [1]. The first issue will be used to provide the basis for an evaluation of possible development philosophies for a kernel DCS. As such it will cover all the major functionality but only to a level of detail sufficient for such an evaluation to be performed. Many of the requirements are therefore intentionally high level and generic, and are meant to outline the functionality that would be required of the kernel DCS, but not yet to the level of the detail required for implementation. The document is also written in a generic fashion in order not to rule out any implementation technology.

ALICE is the LHC experiment dedicated to heavy ion (Pb, Ca) physics. ALICE will be installed in point 2 of LHC, the former point 2 of LEP. The luminosity at the interaction point will be in the order of 10 /sup 27/ (10/sup 31/ for p-p). Consequently, the radiation level in ALICE will be comparatively low. We will use the existing infrastructure. Therefore, no noticeable civil engineering work will be necessary. Minor modifications will be made to gain a second access to the experiment cavern-mainly for the union arm spectrometer. ALICE will reuse the L3 solenoid, which is already installed and has been used in LEP as spectrometer magnet. A dipole magnet with a very large aperture is in addition required for the Dimuon Arm spectrometer and will be installed next to the L3 solenoid. The detectors in ALICE are concentrated around the IP inside L3 (Barrel) and along the muon arm. Some small forward detectors will be located toward the injection area at a larger distance from IP (~100 m). After a review of the present status of both projects some important milestones will be highlighted in the conclusion. (9 refs).

An essential part of the DiMuon Arm Spectrometer of the ALICE experiment is a conventional Dipole Magnet of about 890 tons which provides the bending power to measure the momenta of muons. The JINR engineering design of the Dipole Magnet, technical characteristics and description of the proposed manufacturing procedure are presented. The proposed Coil fabrication technique is based on winding of flat pancakes, which are subsequently bent on cylindrical mandrels. The pancakes are then stacked and cured with prepreg insulation. The method is demonstrated on hand of the prototype II, which consists of a pancake made with full-size aluminium conductor. Some details of electromagnetic and mechanical calculations are described. The results of measuring of mechanical and electrical characteristics of materials related to the coil composite structure are discussed.

    <abstract>
Proposal of abstract for MT16, Tallahesse, Florida, 26th September to 2nd October 1999.
A large Dipole Magnet is required for the Muon Arm Spectrometer of the ALICE experiment at the LHC.
The absence of strong requirements on the symmetry and homogeneity of the magnetic field has lead to a design dominated by economic and feasibility considerations.
In March 1997 the decision was taken to build a resistive dipole magnet for the muon spectrometer of the ALICE experiment. Since then, design work has been pursued in JINR/Russia and at CERN. While a common concept has been adopted for the construction of the steel core, two different proposals have been made for the manufacturing technology of the excitation coils. In both cases, however, the conductor material will be Aluminium.
The general concept of the dipole magnet is based on a window frame return yoke, fabricated from low carbon steel sheets. The flat vertical poles follow the defined acceptance angle of 9 degrees. The excitation coils are of saddle type. The coils are wound from large hollow Aluminium profiles. They are cooled by pressurized demineralised water. The coil ends are located to both sides of the magnet yoke and determine the overall length of the magnet. The main flux direction in the gap is horizontal and perpendicular to the LHC beam axis.
Both coil concepts and the underlying manufacturing technology are compared and the present status of the development of the magnet is described.

    <abstract>
Presentation made at LEB99, Snowmass, Colorado, 20-24 September 1999
The Alice experiment will include more than 10 individual detectors of different technologies and with specific operating conditions. The instrumentation required to run and control the operation of each sub-detector will include commercial and custom hardware of various standards.
The detector control system (DCS) for the ALICE experiment will allow a hierarchical consolidation of the participating systems to obtain a fully integrated detector operation. This goal will be achieved by clearly defined interfaces between system layers. In addition, sub-detectors will continue to be able to access their equipment independently from other sub-detectors for maintenance, upgrading and debugging. The architecture will, therefore, be based on partitioning into self-contained sub-systems, which can be separately developed, maintained and operated. Horizontal communication between sub-systems will consequently be avoided.
The DCS will use, where possible, commercial hardware components and software.
The clear vertical separation and hierarchical structure of the system should also allow implementing of a single user interface to the experiment, which can access the DAQ control and the DCS.
The technologies which will be used for the controller level hardware and the software options are explained. Also described is the current development status and the experience to date with the small-scale prototypes that are used to verify design choices.

Throughout the LHC project fieldbuses will be required to connect and control equipment and devices of various types. It will be necessary to integrate both industrial equipment and custom designed devices. In order to increase efficiency of resources the working group recommends restricting the choice of fieldbuses, to be used in the years to come at CERN and by the various institutes collaborating in the LHC project, to three : CAN bus, PROFIBUS and WORLDFIP. Keywords : fieldbus, controls, standard, CAN, PROFIBUS, WORLDFIP
