Resonant Multi-Turn Extraction : Principle and Experiments
/ Gilardoni, S S (CERN) ; Giovannozzi, Massimo ; Martini, M ; Métral, E ; Scaramuzzi, P ; Steerenberg, R ; Muller, AS
Recently a novel approach to perform multi-turn extraction was proposed based on beam splitting in the transverse phase space by means of trapping inside stable islands. In addition to numerical simulations, aimed at assessing the feasibility of the proposed technique, an experimental campaign was launched since the year 2002 at the CERN Proton Synchrotron. [...]

Implementation of the proposed multi-turn extraction at the CERN Proton Synchrotron
/ Giovannozzi, Massimo (CERN)
Following the positive results of the three-year measurement campaign at the CERN Proton Synchrotron, concerning beam splitting with stable islands in the transverse phase space, a study of a possible implementation of the proposed Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE) was undertaken. The novel approach would allow a substantial reduction of beam losses, with respect to the present scheme, when delivering the high-intensity proton beams required for the planned CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso Project (CNGS). Since 2003, high-intensity single-bunch proton beams with low longitudinal emittance have been affected by heavy losses after less than one synchrotron period after injection. The effects of the resonance frequency of the responsible impedance, longitudinal emittance and chromaticity on the intensity threshold were already discussed in detail in 2004, comparing analytical predictions with simulation results. This paper gives an overview of the operation and experience gained in the running of magnetic horns in conventional neutrino beam lines (K2K, MiniBooNE, NuMI and CNGS) over the last decade. Increasing beam power puts higher demands on horn conductors but even more on their hydraulic and electrical systems, while the horn environment itself becomes more hostile due to radiation. [...]

Parallel Computation of Beam-Beam Interactions including Longitudinal Motion
/ Herr, Werner ; Jones, F W
In beam-beam macroparticle simulations for collider rings, the accurate determination of the incoherent spectrum and potentially unstable coherent modes requires (1) large numbers of collisions, and (2) accurate electric field solutions at each collision. On single processor, a self consistent simulation typically uses a 2D model of the beam-beam interaction in order to achieve a reasonable computation time, however for the long (~0.3m) bunches in the LHC we wish to include the 3rd dimension in order to account for effects such as longitudinal motion, crossing angle, and the beam size and density variations. Nonlinear Optimization of a Low Emittance CLIC Damping Ring Lattice

/ Walker, N (DESY) ; Schulte, Daniel (CERN) ; Wolski, A (LBL, Berkeley) ; Tenenbaum, P G (SLAC) ; Seryi, Andrei (SLAC) ; Woodley, M (SLAC)
One of the major challenges facing the proposed high-energy linear e^+e^ colliders is the preservation of the extremely small vertical emittance from the damping rings to the interaction point (IP). Simulation Study of Coupled-Bunch Instabilities due to Resistive Wall, Ions, or Electron Cloud

We present simulated mode spectra and rise times for the ensuing coupled-bunch instabilities, and show that observations at the KEKB HER are consistent with a horizontal instability driven by carbon monoxide ions in a region without magnetic field..

Progress in the Design of a Damped and Tapered Accelerating Structure for CLIC
/ Raguin, J Y (CERN) ; Wilson, Ian H (CERN) ; Wuensch, Walter (CERN)
Two of the main requirements for CLIC 30 GHz accelerating structures are an average accelerating gradient of 150 MV/m and features which suppress long-range transverse and longitudinal wakefields. The main effects that constrain the design of a copper structure are a surface electric field limit of about 300 MV/m, from evidence produced by the CLIC high-gradient testing program, and a pulsed surface heating temperature rise limit estimated to be of the order of 100 K. / Benedetto, Elena (CERN) ; Schulte, Daniel (CERN) ; Zimmermann, Frank (CERN) ; Ohmi, K (KEK, Tsukuba) ; Papaphilippou, Y (ESRF, Grenoble) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (GSI, Darmstadt)
We simulate the long-term emittance growth of a proton beam due to an electron cloud of moderate density. This emittance growth is sometimes characterized by a rapid blow up of the bunch tail, and it appears to be different from the strong head-tail instability, which is observed at higher electron densities. The collimation system of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) must fulfil a number of conflicting requirements, namely it should (1) remove beam halo to reduce the detector background, (2) provide a minimum distance between collimators and collision point for muon suppression, (3) ensure collimator survival and machine protection against errand beam pulses, (4) not be excessively long, and (5) not amplify incoming trajectory fluctuations via the collimator wake fields. Two optical systems have been designed the first linear, the second non-linear , which promise to meet all these requirements for the design beam energy of 1.5 TeV. [...]
