Following the positive results of the three-year measurement campaign at the CERN Proton Synchrotron, concerning beam splitting with stable islands in the transverse phase space, a study of a possible implementation of the proposed Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE) was undertaken. The novel approach would allow a substantial reduction of beam losses, with respect to the present scheme, when delivering the high-intensity proton beams required for the planned CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso Project (CNGS). Simulation study on the beneficial effect of linear coupling for the transverse mode-coupling instability in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron / Métral, Elias (CERN) ; Rumolo, Giovanni (CERN)
The intensity threshold of the transverse mode-coupling instability in a flat vertical chamber, as in the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron, is much higher in the horizontal plane than in the vertical one. This asymmetry between the transverse planes led us to the idea that linear coupling from skew quadrupoles could be used to increase the intensity threshold. [...]

Since 2003, high-intensity single-bunch proton beams with low longitudinal emittance have been affected by heavy losses after less than one synchrotron period after injection. The effects of the resonance frequency of the responsible impedance, longitudinal emittance and chromaticity on the intensity threshold were already discussed in detail in 2004, comparing analytical predictions with simulation results. We present formulae for the coherent and incoherent tune shifts due to the nonlinear resistive wall wake field for a single beam traveling between two parallel plates. In particular, we demonstrate that the nonlinear terms of the resistive-wall wake field become important if the gap between the plates is comparable to the transverse rms beam size. [...]

The demands on the high power production (~ 150 MW) and the needs to transport the 100 A drive beam for about 1 km without losses, makes the PETS design rather unique and the operation very challenging. Parallel Computation of Beam-Beam Interactions including Longitudinal Motion / Herr, Werner ; Jones, F W
In beam-beam macroparticle simulations for collider rings, the accurate determination of the incoherent spectrum and potentially unstable coherent modes requires (1) large numbers of collisions, and (2) accurate electric field solutions at each collision. On single processor, a self consistent simulation typically uses a 2D model of the beam-beam interaction in order to achieve a reasonable computation time, however for the long (~0.3m) bunches in the LHC we wish to include the 3rd dimension in order to account for effects such as longitudinal motion, crossing angle, and the beam size and density variations. Wakefield and dispersive effects in the main linac of a future linear collider can strongly affect the beam-beam interaction at the collision point [1]. For a static situation, this paper investigates the luminosity for realistic bunches in the case of the TESLA, NLC and CLIC projects assuming different degrees of collision optimisation. [...]

Effects of Dynamic Misalignements and Feedback Performance on Luminosity Stability in Linear Colliders / Seryi, Andrei (SLAC) ; Hendrickson, L ; Raubenheimer, T O ; Tenenbaum, P G ; Woodley, M ; Schulte, Daniel (CERN)
The performance of high energy linear colliders depends critically on the stability with which they can maintain the collisions of nanometer-size beams. Ground motion and vibration, among other effects, will produce dynamic misalignments which can offset the beams at the collision point. [...]

Damping Ring to Interaction Point Beam Transport Issues / Walker, N (DESY) ; Schulte, Daniel (CERN) ; Wolski, A (LBL, Berkeley) ; Tenenbaum, P G (SLAC) ; Seryi, Andrei (SLAC) ; Woodley, M (SLAC)
One of the major challenges facing the proposed high-energy linear e^+e^ colliders is the preservation of the extremely small vertical emittance from the damping rings to the interaction point (IP). This emittance must be transported through bunch compression sections, the main linac and finally through the beam delivery system to the IP. [...]

Simulations of the TESLA Linear Collider with a Fast Feedback System / Schulte, Daniel (CERN) ; Walker, N ; White, G
The tolerances on the beams as they collide at the interaction point of the TESLA linear collider are very tight due to the nano-metre scale final vertical bunch spot sizes. Ground motion causes the beams to increase in emittance and drift out of collision leading to dramatic degradation of luminosity performance. [...]

2002 Nonlinear Optics Measurements and Modelling for the CERN SPS / Faus-Golfe, Angeles ; Tomas, Rogelio ; Arduini, Gianluigi ; Zimmermann, Frank
In 2002, nonlinear chromaticity, coupling, amplitude-dependent detuning, chromatic phase advance, resonance driving terms, and off-energy orbits were measured in the CERN SPS at 26 GeV/c. The optics model has been updated by adjusting the strengths of nonlinear field errors in the dipoles and quadrupoles, so as to reproduce the measured nonlinear chromaticity. [...]

We present simulated mode spectra and rise times for the ensuing coupled-bunch instabilities, and show that observations at the KEKB HER are consistent with a horizontal instability driven by carbon monoxide ions in a region without magnetic field..

Progress in the Design of a Damped and Tapered Accelerating Structure for CLIC / Raguin, J Y (CERN) ; Wilson, Ian H (CERN) ; Wuensch, Walter (CERN)
Two of the main requirements for CLIC 30 GHz accelerating structures are an average accelerating gradient of 150 MV/m and features which suppress long-range transverse and longitudinal wakefields. The main effects that constrain the design of a copper structure are a surface electric field limit of about 300 MV/m, from evidence produced by the CLIC high-gradient testing program, and a pulsed surface heating temperature rise limit estimated to be of the order of 100 K. The collimation system of the Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) must fulfil a number of conflicting requirements, namely it should (1) remove beam halo to reduce the detector background, (2) provide a minimum distance between collimators and collision point for muon suppression, (3) ensure collimator survival and machine protection against errand beam pulses, (4) not be excessively long, and (5) not amplify incoming trajectory fluctuations via the collimator wake fields. Two optical systems have been designed — the first linear, the second non-linear —, which promise to meet all these requirements for the design beam energy of 1.5 TeV. [...]
