The international Future Circular Collider (FCC) study is designing hadron, lepton and lepton-hadron colliders based on a new 100 km tunnel in the Geneva region. The main focus and ultimate goal of the study are high luminosity proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 100 TeV, using 16 T Nb3Sn dipole magnets. [...]

The luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) requires the development of a new generation of superconducting magnets based on Nb3Sn technology. In order to monitor the magnet thermo-mechanical behaviour during its service life, from the coil fabrication to the magnet operation, reliable sensing systems need to be implemented. [...]

This contribution presents distributed and multi-point fiber-optic monitoring of cryogenic temperatures along a superconducting power transmission line down to 30 K and over 20 m distance. Multi-point measurements were conducted using fiber Bragg gratings sensors coated with two different functional overlays (epoxy and PMMA) demonstrating cryogenic operation in the range 300 – 4.2 K. Analysis of the quench propagation along Nb3Sn Rutherford cables with the THELMA code. Part I: geometric and thermal models / Manfreda, G. (Udine U.) ; Bellina F. (Udine U.)
The paper describes the new lumped thermal model recently implemented in THELMA code for the coupled electromagnetic–thermal analysis of superconducting cables. A new geometrical model is also presented, which describes the Rutherford cables used for the accelerator magnets. [...]
