CERN is still recruiting - Pass it on!

This year there are still 70 limited duration staff vacancies to fill. Although the Web is proving a very effective way of attracting candidates, CERN people can play their part in the recruitment drive. To find out how you can help, read on.

Despite the electronic era, word-of-mouth communication is still doing a good job! Over the last year about 23% of staff applicants found out about our vacancies through personal contacts. The article published last year in the Bulletin (10.4.and 24.4.2000) about recruitment at CERN had a very good initial response from people ready to spread the word about recruitment programmes in schools, universities and at conferences. As the article pointed out, it is still really important for CERN personnel to feel involved in this process. EST Division is now preparing its own initiative to send their engineers and technicians back to their schools in different Member States to attract candidates. We invite you once again to join in with this effort. The recruitment office is ready to help with advice and information packs on the different fellow, student and staff recruitment programmes.

HR Division took the advantage of the CERN travelling exhibition's visit to Cracow last October to inform locals about recruitment at the Laboratory.

This year the aim is to fill about 70 limited duration vacancies at CERN, mostly for engineers and technicians with a few positions for administrators. It is becoming very hard to attract technicians and engineers in fields like computing, electronics and electrical engineering in sufficient numbers, and to ensure at the same time an acceptable nationality distribution. HR Division is exploring new ways of attracting candidates to these jobs and to the student and fellow programmes:

  • Improve our visibility and attractiveness on the CERN Website that already accounts for more than 40% of our staff Applications.
  • Web-Based recruitment agencies for the publishing of vacancies in preference to traditional newspaper advertising
  • Recruitment Fairs - on 16 & 17 March 2001, a joint team from EP, PS, SL and HR was in Amsterdam for the Nationale Carrièrebeurs the largest hiring fair for technicians in the Netherlands;
  • Recruitment Outreach in collaboration with the CERN exhibition. Following the positive experience in Cracow last October, events will be organised in Vienna, Lisbon and Prague this year.
Frank Cliff of HR Division, who is co-ordinating recruitment outreach activities explains 'we need to market CERN's image as an employer widely, repeatedly and in cost-effective ways. A very good way is to use the contacts and communication potential of CERN people. As ambassadors of CERN, they can reach a lot of people not only in this area, but also in their own countries'.
So remember, if you are going on a trip where you might meet potential candidates, take an information pack with you - you may just meet the perfect person for a job, a fellowship or a student programme!
