Count-down to CERN's 50th Anniversary

Exactly 50 years ago, on 1 July 1953, CERN's founding convention was signed. A year later, after it was ratified by the founding Member States, the Organization itself saw the light of day. CERN is getting ready to celebrate the historic anniversary. The preparations are beginning for a year of festivities in 2004 and you can already access the graphics for it. >>

Lucien Montanet (1930 - 2003)

It was with great sadness that we heard that Lucien Montanet had passed away on Thursday June 19th. Until quite recently, he had still been here among us discussing physics with his usual enthusiasm. >>

Frans Verbeure (1942 - 2003)

On 8 June Frans Verbeure, full professor at the University of Antwerpen and Head of the Particle Physics group, passed away after a long illness. >>

ERRATUM: Work smart, wear your hard hat

An error appeared in the article «Work smart, wear your hard hat» published in Weekly Bulletin 27/2003, page 5. The impact which pierced a hole in the hard hat worn by Gerd Fetchenhauer was the equivalent of a box weighing 5 kg and not 50 kg. >>
