Call for Volunteers! Help Wanted for the 50th Anniversary Public Visits

On 16 October 2004, CERN opens its doors to the public. The Visits Service is already busy with preparations for this day of special events to mark the fiftieth anniversary, and is recruiting volunteers.

On 16 October 2004, CERN will be holding an Open Day to mark its Golden Jubilee.
Members of the public will be invited to CERN to discover 50 years of history as they tour 50 different sites.
The sites include the experiment halls, the assembly halls for the LHC detectors and magnets as well as the computer centre and the fire station. With a programme offering site visits, talks, a play on a scientific theme and a variety of workshops there will be something for everybody, including an area set aside with stimulating games to entertain the very young.
A number of evening tours will be organized specifically for the inhabitants of Cessy, St Genis, Meyrin and Ferney-Voltaire, where the experiment halls for CMS, ALICE, ATLAS and LHCb are respectively located.
This is your opportunity to show the public some of CERN's work. The Visits Service needs your help, which will be very much appreciated. We are recruiting volunteers to guide visitors around the sites, give talks, run workshops and to welcome and inform the visitors, who will be coming from all the Member States. You do not need to be a specialist, or to actually work at one of the visit points as there are a huge variety of activities - including distributing information to school groups as they arrive, and helping the magician set up his show.
Volunteers will receive a t-shirt or a windbreaker, a lunchtime meal and a small commemorative plaque. Taking part in an open day is a rewarding experience, and this one will certainly be a memorable occasion with 50 different sites opening their doors. Don't miss this opportunity to participate and to pass on your enthusiasm to students, local residents and friends. Who knows - maybe you'll even discover parts of the laboratory you didn't know before?
