Searches for new physics in rare decays of heavy flavors at CMS
/ Polikarpov, Sergey (Dubna, JINR)
/CMS Collaboration
As direct searches for beyond the Standard model physics at the LHC have not been successful, more and more attention is drawn to the indirect searches. In particular, rare decays of beauty and charm hadrons present a sensitive laboratory for BSM physics and new particles, since they can contribute in loop diagrams, even if their mass is much heavier than that of the final-state particles. Recent measurements of top cross sections at CMS
/ Javier Del Riego Badas
/CMS Collaboration
This contribution presents recent cross section measurements for top quark pair production ($\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$) and single top quark production in association with a W boson ($\mathrm{tW}$) in proton-proton collisions at the CMS experiment at LHC. For $\mathrm{t\bar{t}}$ production, data from 2017 at a center-of-mass (CM) energy of $5.02\,\mathrm{TeV}$ with an integrated luminosity of $302\,\mathrm{pb}^{-1}$ were analyzed, with a measured inclusive cross section of $62.3\pm1.5\,\mathrm{(stat)}\pm2.4\,\mathrm{(syst)}\pm1.2\mathrm{(lumi)}\,\mathrm{pb}$, consistent with standard model (SM) predictions. Offline secondary vertex reconstruction in the CMS detector
/ Tsai, Emily Minyun (Northeastern U.)
/CMS Collaboration
Event reconstruction in particle detectors transforms detector signals into physics objects and, in large particle detectors, generally involves track reconstruction, vertex reconstruction, object reconstruction, and object identification. Vertex reconstruction typically involves two steps: clustering reconstructed tracks into vertex candidates, or seeds, and fitting the vertex candidates to obtain vertex parameters. [...]

High-precision measurement of the W boson mass at CMS
/ Bruschini, Davide (INFN, Pisa ; Pisa, Scuola Normale Superiore)
/CMS Collaboration
The W boson mass is measured using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 16.8 inverse fb recorded during 2016 by the CMS experiment. The W boson mass is obtained from a fit of the two-dimensional $p_T - \eta$ distribution in a sample of W $\to \mu\nu$ decays, categorized by charge, yielding one of the most precise measurements of the W mass to date..

Displaced Vertex Track Trigger for the CMS Phase-2 Upgrade
/ Ryan Edward Mccarthy
/CMS Collaboration
As part of the CMS Phase-2 upgrade, track information from the outer tracker will be available
at the Level-1 trigger and with this comes the expanded opportunity to trigger on physics objects
such as long-lived particles. Presented here is a feasibility study in calculating displaced vertex
information using an extended version of the Level-1 tracking that identifies displaced tracks.
Combinations of tracks are used to form vertex candidates and a gradient-boosted decision tree
is used to distinguish between misidentified and genuine displaced vertices. [...]

An overview of the CMS High-Granularity Calorimeter
/ Amendola, Chiara (CERN)
/CMS Collaboration
Calorimetry at the High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) faces two enormous challenges, particularly in the forward direction: radiation tolerance and unprecedented in-time event pileup. To meet these challenges, the CMS Collaboration is preparing to replace its current endcap calorimeters for the HL-LHC era with a high-granularity calorimeter (HGCAL), featuring an unprecedented transverse and longitudinal segmentation, for both the electromagnetic and hadronic sectors, with 5D information (space-time-energy) read out. [...]
