Safety Training: basic safety and access courses

Objective

The purpose of the basic safety courses is to increase awareness for everyone working on the CERN site (CERN staff, associates, outside companies, students and apprentices) of the various hazards existing on site, and how to recognise and avoid them.

Safety course changes

The current organisation of basic safety courses is changing. There will be two main modifications: the organisation of the courses and the implementation of a specific new training course for the LHC machine during the LHC tests and hardware commissioning phase.

Organisational changes

This concerns the existing basic safety training, currently called level 1, level 2 and level 3. Under the new procedure, a video will be projected in registration building 55 and will run every day at 14.00 and 15.00 in English. The duration of the video will be 50 minutes. The course contents will be the same as the slides currently used, plus a video showing real situations. With this new organization, participants will systematically follow the 3 levels, irrespective of where they work at CERN. It will be available in French by the end of the year. The individuals will validate their attendance immediately at the end of the course, using the card reader.

This new procedure will be applied in English from 13 October 2005.

Implementation of new specific training

Due to specific hazards existing during the LHC tests and hardware commissioning phase, the Safety Commission has developed and implemented an additional, specific safety course, of the web-based training type, called “level 4”.

It mainly addresses three hazards: cryogenic hazards, electrical hazards relating to magnet circuits with large storage energy and ionising and non-ionising radiation originating from the RF(Radio Frequency) cavities.

At the end of the course, people will know how to identify these hazards and how to react in the best way if faced with them.

The most Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  1. Which safety course should I attend for working anywhere at CERN?
You should attend what is called the basic safety course (equivalent of previous level 1, level 2 and level 3 safety courses).

It is mandatory for all persons working on the CERN sites (CERN staff, associates, employees of outside companies, students and apprentices).

  2. Which safety course should I attend in addition to the basic safety course if I work in the LHC tunnel?
You should attend “level 4” training and take the test.

  3. How long are the safety courses valid?
The basic safety course is valid for 5 years and “level 4” for 3 years.

  4. Should I register before attending the safety courses?
    Yes and no.

No for the basic safety courses.

For the English basic safety course, you should go to building 55 at 14.00 or 15.00 and attend the course. After the course, you validate your presence at the basic safety course yourself by passing your CERN card in front of the card reader and by confirming it on the tactile computer screen.

For the French basic safety course (which is not yet available in a video version), you need to go building 65 on Tuesday morning, at 9.00 or 11.00. You attend the course, registering your name on a list, which will be validated by the administration.

    Yes for “level 4”.

If you have an AIS LOGIN (used for edh documents), you can follow the course from anywhere (even outside CERN) with AIS login by accessing http://sir.cern.ch.

If you have no AIS LOGIN, you need to register at the following address: level4.training@cern.ch and you will be invited to attend the web-based course.

  5. When will the French version of the basic safety course be available?
    At the end of 2005

  6. What is the test for the web-based safety course “level 4” about?

The web-based training “level 4” consists of 2 parts.

At the end of each part, there are 5 multiple choice questions about the course's content.

You should answer all questions correctly.

  7. What happens if I pass the test?
You will receive by internal mail a yellow sticker as proof that you have passed the test, which you must put on the plastic support of the access card - not on the access card itself as it might destroy some card readers. Bring your sticker with you when entering the LHC areas with hazards mentioned in the “Level 4” course.

  8. What happens if I fail the test at the end of the course?

If you fail any of the 2 tests, you have the opportunity of redoing the part concerned and to take the test a second time.

If you fail after the second attempt, the system will give you the name of the person to contact.
