Vibrating minds

Ed Witten is one of the leading scientists in the field of string theory, the theory that describes elementary particles as vibrating strings. This week he leaves CERN after having spent a few months here on sabbatical. His wish is that the LHC will unveil supersymmetry. >>

Preparing for the re-start

The end of a Council week is a good opportunity to bring you up to date with the status of the LHC, and I’m pleased to say that we had a good deal of positive news to report to the delegations today. >>

A busy week for Council

This has been a busy week for the CERN Council, and there is much to report. Firstly, I’m pleased to say that Council approved the Organization’s Medium Term Plan, and with it the budget for financial year 2010. >>

The latest from the LHC

Sector 4-5 is being warmed to room temperature. The sector was previously warmed to 80 Kelvin in order to perform a test on the copper component of the busbars at non-superconducting temperatures (See previous update). >>

Building bridges … and accelerators

Lyn Evans, the LHC project leader, was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) to celebrate his role not just in building accelerators, but also in building bridges between nations. He was one of four notables honoured at the event on Friday 5 June, coinciding with the University’s 450th Anniversary. >>

Microsoft founder opens the Windows of the micro-world

On Monday 8 June Bill Gates came to CERN for a short visit along with his son Rory. The Bulletin managed to grab a few words with him and discovered how much he appreciates (and supports) fundamental science. >>

EDMS - Reaching the Million Mark

When Christophe Seith from the company Cegelec sat down to work on 14 May 2009 at 10:09 a.m. to create the EDMS document entitled "Rapport tournée PH semaine 20", little did he know that he would be the proud creator of the millionth EDMS document and the happy prize winner of a celebratory bottle of champagne to mark the occasion. >>

The Japanese artist Mariko Mori visited CERN on 25 May. She met several scientists and found the visit very inspiring. >>

Get prepared for the spotlight

With the re-start of the LHC, not just the scientific community will have its eyes on CERN. Hundreds of journalists will continue to ensure high media coverage of the Lab’s activities. As the DG stated in his message in issue No.15 of The Bulletin, "we have a greater degree of responsibility in the way we communicate". The Media Training organized by the Press Office gives you the chance to learn how to do it. >>

Be active - eat well! Two-wheels’ safety week.

The health campaign "Be active – eat well" was a resounding success. The campaign, which was held from 25 to 29 May 2009, was organised by the Medical Service jointly with the Restaurants Supervisory Committee, the CERN Management, the Staff Association and CHIS, with the active support of CERN’s restaurants. >>
