Regattas everywhere!
Some sailors regard the Match-Racing of the Surprises as the highlight of the season: it’s too late for you to register for a team now, but definitely you are in time to plan on coming along to the Port Choiseul wall this weekend (24, 25 June), from 10ish both mornings, to cheer your teams in one of the most skilled uses of the boats imaginable. All races are usually pretty accessible to sightseers from the wall, and of course there are the teams waiting for their turn, ferried out by our faithful Q-Boat, to talk to, and tell them how you would have tactically won, if only you had been on board... All thanks to Marco Benvenuti for having got the Club passionate about such races a few seasons back, and to Rob Veenhof, our home-grown and extremely knowledgeable Umpire.
Next week is the Semaine du Soir of Versoix, where again, many YCC teams will be participating (no, it’s off Port Choiseul, despite the name), probably different teams for most evenings available, and with boats ranging from the dinghies to the Surprises - via a lot of privately owned boats where you will recognise the Club-member owners. Again, all thanks to Michał for masterminding the logistics of organisation, selection of crews: most of us would have given up! It is not as easy as the Match-Racing to watch from the shore but anyone doing a course or on Q-Boat duty thes days can probably persuade their teacher to sail in the right direction!
And finally, a blast from the past! Long-standing members will appreciate the picture of the boat which used to belong to YCC, before being replaced by the GibSea. She is pictured in the far-flung foreign port of Yvoire, looking much the same as when we last remember her - but maybe the lack of an outboard on the bracket means that someone was more successful than us in securing replacement parts for the inboard motor!
