Sustainable development and CERN’s role: Panel discussion at the Globe
On Thursday 21 June, on the occasion of the UN Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development, some ambitious ecological projects involving CERN and its technologies will be presented in an afternoon of lectures and discussions in the Globe. The event is an opportunity for people at CERN to discuss the Organization’s green credentials and their ecological impact on life in the local area.
“The Globe was seen as a metaphor for the planet and a symbol of sustainable development when it was known as the ‘Palace of Equilibrium’ at Expo02 in Switzerland. Now here at CERN, it is the perfect place to host a debate on the role of technology and innovation in this area," enthuses Bernard Pellequer, who is in charge of event planning for the venue.
On the afternoon of 21 June, speakers will present several ambitious projects, such as the eco-neighbourhood “Les Vergers”, the Vernes lake in Meyrin and the district heating network being developed by the Services industriels de Genève (SIG). Cristoforo Benvenuti will also present his solar panels based on ultra-high vaccuum technologies developed at CERN. The event will be complemented by a presentation by Joël de Rosnay, the French researcher and popular scientist who, among other things, participated in the design of the “Palace of Equilibrium”.
The event will conclude with a discussion in which the audience will be able to put questions to the panelists.
