Displacement and emission currents from PLZT 8/65/35 and 4/95/5 excited by a negative voltage pulse at the rear electrode
/ Benedek, G ; Boscolo, I ; Handerek, J ; Marchesini, S ; De Martinis, C ; Riege, H ; Scurati, A
It is shown that non-prepoled PLZT ceramics, both in ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phase, emit intense current bursts when a negative exciting voltage is applied to the rear surface of the cathode. The spontaneous polarization induced in the bulk by applying the field through the cathode disk, creates a sheet of negative charge on the diode boundary of the ferroelectric. [...]

Experience with the LEP vacuum system at energies above 90 GeV and future expectations
/ Billy, J C ; Bojon, J P ; Hilleret, Noël (CERN) ; Jiménez, M ; Laugier, I
The LEP storage ring has been operated at energies above 90 GeV for more than 1000 hours during 1997. Because of the rapid increase with the beam energy of the power radiated as synchrotron light, the vacuum system has been submitted to very stringent conditions as far as power evacuation and photon stimulated gas desorption are concerned. / Bremer, J ; Cundy, Donald C ; Dauvergne, J P ; Gonidec, A ; Kesseler, G ; Kubischta, Werner ; Linser, G ; Schinzel, D ; Taureg, Hans ; Wertelaers, Piet
The NA48 cryogenic system has to provide stable thermal conditions (120 K) in a 9000 liter liquid krypton calorimeter, and has to ensure safe and loss free storage of the liquid during idle periods. Direct cooling of the krypton by nitrogen is used in emergency cases, while an intermediate cooler, containing saturated liquid argon at around 10 bar (117 K) is used under normal operation conditions when high thermal stability is needed. The AD Vacuum System : Construction and Commissioning ; rev. version

CERN has built a new experimental facility, called the Antiproton Decelerator (AD), by transforming two existing machines: the "Antiproton Collector" (AC) and the "Antiproton Accumulator" (AA). To achieve adequate beam performance once the antiproton beam is decelerated to its final value of 0.1 GeV/c, it was necessary to lower the average pressure by nearly two orders of magnitude. [...]

Low Temperature Gaseous Helium and very High Turbulence Experiments
/ Pietropinto, S ; Baudet, C ; Castaing, B ; Chabaud, B ; Gagne, Y ; Hébral, B ; Ladam, Y ; Lebrun, P ; Pirotte, O ; Poulain, C et al.
Cryogenic gaseous helium gives access to extreme turbulent experimental conditions. The very high cooling helium flow rates available at CERN have been used to reach Reynolds numbers up to Re ~ 10**7 in a round jet experiment. [...]

Test Results of a 1.2 kg/s Centrifugal Liquid Helium Pump for the ATLAS Superconducting Toroid Magnet System
/ Pengo, R ; Junker, S ; Passardi, Giorgio ; Pirotte, O ; ten Kate, H H J
The toroid superconducting magnet of ATLAS-LHC experiment at CERN will be indirectly cooled by means of forced flow of liquid helium at about 4.5 K. A centrifugal pump will be used, providing a mass flow of 1.2 kg/s and a differential pressure of 40 kPa (ca. [...]

Flower, a Model for the Analysis of Hydraulic Networks and Processes
/ Bottura, L ; Rosso, C
We have developed in the past years a model that describes hydraulic networks that are typical of the cryogenic interconnection of superconducting magnets. The original model, called Flower, was used mostly to provide consistent boundary conditions for the operation of a magnet. [...]

Analytical Calculation of Current Distribution in Multistrand Superconducting Cables
/ Bottura, L ; Breschi, M ; Fabbri, M G
In recent years the problem of current distribution in multistrand superconducting cables has received increasing attention for large scale superconductivity applications due to its effect on the stability of fusion magnets and the field quality of accelerator magnets. A modelling approach based on distributed parameters has revealed to be very effective in dealing with long cables made of some tens or hundreds of strands. [...]

Development of a Mass Flowmeter based on the Coriolis Acceleration for Liquid, Supercritical and Superfluid Helium
/ De Jonge, T ; Patten, T ; Rivetti, A ; Serio, L
Beginning in the 1980's, Coriolis meters have gained generalised acceptance in liquid applications with a worldwide installed base of over 300,000 units. To meet the demands of cryogenic applications below 20 K, off-the-shelf Coriolis meters have been used, with minor design modifications and operational changes. [...]

Measurements of Multi-Layer Insulation at High Boundary Temperature, using a Simple Non-Calorimetric Method
/ Mazzone, L ; Ratcliffe, G ; Rieubland, Jean Michel ; Vandoni, Giovanna
In spite of abundant literature, the thermal performance of Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) still deserves dedicated investigation for specific applications, as the achievable insulation strongly depends on installation details. Furthermore, less accurate information is available for warm than for cold boundaries, since errors due to edge effects in small test benches increase strongly with warm boundary temperature. [...]

Cryogenics for the CERN Solar Axion Telescope (CAST) using a LHC Dipole Prototype Magnet
/ Barth, K ; Passardi, Giorgio ; Pezzetti, M ; Pirotte, O ; Riege, H ; Vullierme, B ; Walckiers, L ; Zioutas, Konstantin
The axion, an as yet hypothetical particle predicted from the solution of the strong CP problem, constitutes a prime candidate for the galactic dark matter and also arises in supersymmetry and superstring theories. If existing, axions should be copiously produced in stellar interiors and there are theoretical expectations for a low-energy axion emission spectrum peaked around a mean energy of ~ 4.4 keV. [...]
