Three cheers for management and communication!

The results of the management and communication training questionnaire are now available on the Human Resources Division's web site.

On behalf of the working group on management and communication training*, Sudeshna Datta-Cockerill and Linda Orr-Easo of HR Division wish to thank everyone who participated in the management and communication programme between 1997 and 2002 and took the time to complete their questionnaire. The questionnaire, designed to obtain feedback on the programme, was sent to 1162 people last autumn, 527 of whom replied, which means a return rate of 45%.
The programme consitsts of three types of courses, one for supervisors in general, another for the present and future managers, and a third, relating to communication, for all CERN staff. Although it has been around for many years, the programme has only existed in its present form since 1997.
The purpose of the questionnaire, which was drawn up in collaboration with the working group on management and communication training*, was to redefine the needs of participants with a view to updating the programme. The questionnaire was divided into three parts, the first on specific seminars, including MOAS/MAPS courses, the second on the organisation of the management and communication programme in general, and the third inviting participants to give their opinions on the overall training needs of the CERN staff, as well as on the specific needs of supervisors, section leaders, project leaders and group leaders.
The programme's organisers received valuable input, revealing, among other things, which seminars were the most appreciated, how the knowledge gained was transferred to the workplace, and how participants were encouraged to use what they had learned in their working environment.
In addition, many participants said that follow-up sessions would be useful for certain seminars. Various ideas for widening the programme are therefore currently being examined, and one pilot project has already been launched.

The questionnaire has enabled participants' current needs to be reviewed and will thus allow the management and communication training programme to continue to meet these needs.
