Open Day: General Information

http://www.cern.ch/cern50/

With 50 visit points, including theatre performances, debates and visits to installations that have never before been opened to the public, CERN's 50th anniversary Open Day is set to be a day to remember.

Seven hundred volunteers have signed up to help for the day. The Open Day team truly appreciates this wonderful show of support! The Open Day would not be possible without their help.

Car parking and Access

Cars with a CERN sticker can access all CERN sites as normal. However, to avoid congestion on Meyrin site, we ask you to park in areas that will not be open to the public (see below) and to use the shuttle services wherever possible for your transport during the day.
Private cars on the French side of the border without a CERN sticker will be diverted to a car park area in the Prévessin site. There is a shuttle service connecting the Meyrin and Prévessin sites via SM18 every 20 minutes.

Private cars on the Swiss side of the border without a CERN sticker will be diverted to the Meyrin swimming pool car park where a shuttle service will be transporting visitors to Parking des Cèdres on the CERN Meyrin site every 20 minutes.

When the Meyrin swimming pool car park fills up, cars will be diverted towards designated car parks on the Meyrin site. Parking for visitors will be allowed only in the south east part of the site, defined as south east of Route Pauli / Route Salam. A shuttle service, with a bus every five minutes, links all visit points on the Meyrin site (operating from 8:30 - 18:00). All Open Day transport is supplied by the TPG.

For Point 2 (ALICE) and Point 5 (CMS), there will be a shuttle service from the Meyrin site every 30 minutes and every 45 minutes respectively. Point 8 is a special case: it is reserved for groups with private coaches, due to the low capacity of this site. However there will be one additional bus available for access to Point 8 departing just before midday. Private cars are not allowed into LHC points. There will be limited parking near the CMS site at Cessy.

We ask those with passes giving access to LHC points to please use the same means of access foreseen for visitors, to avoid blocking LHC points with CERN cars.

Spaces will be reserved in some CERN car parks in the week preceding the Open Day as tents for welcome points have to be installed.

Safety

About 20 000 people have attended previous CERN Open Days. We expect a similar number this year. Attendance will strongly depend on weather conditions.

The number of people on the site during the Open Day will be a factor of five to ten higher than usual. To reduce the risk to visitors the Open Day working group has carried out safety checks at all visit points. All TSOs have been asked to identify potential risks in their areas and to take all necessary measures to reduce or eliminate them.

All buildings that are not part of the Open Day must be closed and locked. Where an entrance door to a building cannot be locked, please ensure offices and workshops are locked inside.

The Globe

The Globe will be inaugurated during the VIP Day on 19 October. After this, work will start again on the insulation of the building. For security reasons, the Globe will not be open to the public on the Open Day.Â

Conferences for residents of LHC experiment communes

In addition to the 50 visit points, there will be a local conference organised for the residents of the Communes of the four LHC experiments. The format of the event will be as follows: a 30-minute speech, given by the experiment spokesman or another physicist in the experiment, followed by a 30-minute Q&A session. Finally, there will be a guided tour of the experimental site. The event is by reservation only. The local Mairies and the "Forum Meyrin" are managing reservations.

Local conferences will take place at 16:30:

  • ALICE: in Centre Culturel Jean Monnet de Saint-Genis-Pouilly,
  • ATLAS: at Point 1,
  • CMS: at Point 5,
  • LHCb: at the Lycée International of Ferney-Voltaire.

Restaurants

All three CERN restaurants will be open on the day. In addition, there will be sandwich points, a picnic tent in the clubs area at Entrance A, and a hot food tent next to building 156.
