CERN CC v Cossonay CC at CERN
on Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

On a hot sunny August afternoon, CERN entertained Cossonay in a friendly match at CERN. Skipper Elvin won the toss and elected to bat, thus ignoring groundsman Osborne’s suggestion to bat second due to residual dew dampening the outfield. CERN started and were fortunate not to lose a wicket in the opening couple of overs, however this luck would soon run out as Osborne, going for a typical lofted drive was well caught at mid-on. CERN soon found themselves in trouble at 30-4 after 9 overs, but the introduction of Ahmed would demonstrate that boundary scoring was possible as he powered his way to 54, ably helped by Elvin (25), before informing his partner he was tired, and a shot that looked to be bound for another 6 was caught at wide long on from the last ball of the over. Crook (14) would then face the next delivery, and in typical fashion, he told his new partner S. Kumar that there was plenty of time and that the big shots were not yet required; so he attempted to hit 12 year old Jay Singh (3-0-12-1) for 6 over long on, only to pick out the fielder. Largely thanks to spinner Arjun’s bowling, CERN were all out for 130 from 28 overs, with the hosts knowing it would take a top class fielding performance to give them any chance of winning.

After a lovely chicken curry and rice tea prepared by Mrs Imtiaz in honour of D’Mello’s 31st birthday, CERN took to the field and began well, with wickets falling in the opening overs, thanks to Shires. However, Franklin (38) and Y. Singh (42*) started to claw back the advantage for the visitors. On a rare occasion, CERN’s fielding was helped by some good catching, with Osborne and Crook taking good catches before birthday boy D’Mello (8-1-25-1) impressed with a spectacular catch to dismiss Boden (27). All this would be in vain though, as Cossonay knocked off the remaining 2 runs to win by 5 wickets with 18 overs to spare.

Many thanks to Cossonay for the competitive yet enjoyable spirit in which the game was played and to all the supporters. A special thank you to Mrs Imtiaz for the wonderful curry!

The next report will cover CERN CC’s weekend tour to Milan.
