THE MANY ROLES OF THE CERN STAFF ASSOCIATION

The Staff Association represents all staff

Article VII 1.01 of the Staff Rules & Regulations (SR&R) stipulates that “[…] the relations between the Director-General and the personnel shall be established either on an individual basis or on a collective basis with the Staff Association as intermediary.”

The role of the Staff Association delegates as representatives of all staff of the Organization before the Director-General and Member States is demonstrated by its participation in different joint committees defined in the SR&R and by TREF. This role was particularly visible in 2009 and 2010 with demonstrations of between one and two thousand participants, first for our Pension Fund in December 2009 and March 2010, then for basic research in August 2010. The presence of the Staff Association was also evident with its public meetings, staff votes in the framework of the 2010 five-yearly review, and other actions.

But the Staff Association is also
  • The CERN Nursery School, which employs 28 qualified staff to supervise some 142 children from all over the world.
  • The coordination of around 50 cultural, humanitarian, sports and leisure clubs. These clubs are open to everyone and enable all staff and their families to meet up and exchange ideas. These clubs facilitate integration and favour dialogue between people of different nationalities and backgrounds.
  • Direct support for sports events (Atomiades, CERN annual relay race).
  • The organization of cultural events on the CERN site: exhibitions and conferences.
  • The organization of the Christmas party for children.
  • Support for humanitarian projects through the Long-Term Collections.
  • Regular contact with staff representatives of other international organizations through the Federation of International Civil Servants’ Associations (FICSA) and the Conference of Staff Associations of International Organizations (CSAIO), as well as with French and Swiss unions in a Collective.
  • A number of benefits for members of the Staff Association, for example reduced rates for TPG season tickets, certain shows, and Swiss FNAC vouchers. More recently, special conditions have been negotiated with the “Banque Cantonale de Genève” (BCGE), the terms of which are explained below.
