CERN CC v Uprising CC at CERN on Sunday 17th June 2012
CERN played Uprising CC in a SCA league match on a hot and humid afternoon, with temperatures more than double those for the previous game. CERN won the toss and elected to bat, making steady progress before losing the first wicket to a run-out. A slow outfield meant that boundaries were few and far between early on, but when Chaudhuri and Imtiaz Ahmed were at the wicket the problem of the outfield was solved by hitting sixes, thus maintaining a good run rate! Imtiaz Ahmed hit 29 and Chaudhuri was eventually out for an excellent 72 with a few overs remaining. It looked as if CERN might not reach 200 but McNaught (17 not out) and Dawood Ahmed (13 not out) eventually helped CERN to a respectable 222 for 8.
Uprising lost two early wickets to the excellent bowling of D’Mello, both caught behind by keeper McNaught. Chaudhuri once again bowled well without any luck and the Uprising run rate was gradually falling behind the required rate. Dawood Ahmed bowled extremely well in his first spell and CERN were on top, but when Uprising’s Jamaican star Burrell came to the wicket that changed dramatically as he succeeded to hit massive sixes and keep the strike for over after over. He was dropped twice and the game swung into Uprising’s favour. Young Dawood Ahmed was brought back on to bowl and Burrell struggled to score against his excellent bowling at a critical stage of the game. With a few overs to go Burrell was then trapped lbw by D’Mello, after which the scoring rate dropped and Uprising ended up with 215 for 8 at the end of their 40 overs, CERN thus winning by 7 runs. Unfortunately, the players were unable to celebrate in the usual style as the spectators had drunk all the beer!
