Evaluation of Frequency Scanning Interferometer Performances for Surveying, Alignment and Monitoring of Physics Instrumentation / Gayde, Jean-Christophe (CERN) ; Kamugasa, Solomon (ETH, Zurich (main))
During the last three years, the performance of Frequency Scanning Interferometry, accurate to a few micrometres, has been evaluated at CERN in the frame of the PACMAN project. Improvements have been studied and tested to make it better suited for typical alignment and survey conditions in accelerators and experiments. [...]

Frequency Scanning Interferometry as New Solution for on-Line Monitoring Inside a Cryostat for the HL-LHC project / Mainaud Durand, Helene (CERN) ; Dijoud, Thibault (CERN) ; Duquenne, Mathieu (CERN ; Unlisted, FR) ; Gayde, Jean-Christophe (CERN) ; Micolon, Frederic (CERN) ; Rude, Vivien (CERN ; Unlisted, FR) ; Sosin, Mateusz (CERN)
For the HL-LHC project, the cryostats of the key components will be equipped permanently with an on-line position monitoring system based on Frequency Scanning Interferometry (FSI). Such a system, based on absolute distance measurement, will determine the position of the inner triplet cold masses w.r.t. [...]

VELO with SMOG2 Impedance-based Heating Localization Analysis / Popovic, Branko Kosta (CERN)
In connection to the proposed upgrade (SMOG2) of the existing gas injection system for the LHCb experiment (SMOG), the potential heating due to induced longitudinal beam impedance of the VELO with the SMOG2 is investigated. The analysis looks at heating of the individual components of the object in the open position, especially potential heating of the SMOG2 cell. [...]

Instability studies at the CERN Proton Synchrotron during transition crossing / Migliorati, M (CERN ; U. Rome La Sapienza (main) ; INFN, Rome) ; Aumon, S (CERN) ; Koukovini-Platia, E (CERN) ; Huschauer, A (CERN) ; Métral, E (CERN) ; Sterbini, G (CERN) ; Wang, N (Beijing, Inst. High Energy Phys.)
The CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS) routinely crosses transition energy at around 6 GeV in order to accelerate protons that are injected in the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) or transferred to users of fixed target experiments. Depending on the beam parameters and intensity, a fast vertical coherent instability occurs during transition crossing. [...]

Use of a Massless Septum to Increase Slow-Extraction Efficiency / Brunner, Kristóf (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Barna, Daniel (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN ; TU Vienna) ; Wiesner, Christoph (CERN)
The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN provides slow-extracted beam for Fixed Target experiments in the North Area. For the higher extracted beam intensities requested by future experimental proposals, beam-loss induced activation will be one of the limiting factors for the availability of such a facility. [...]

Progress Toward a Dynamic Extraction Bump for Slow Extraction in the CERN SPS / Stoel, Linda (CERN ; TU Vienna) ; Benedikt, Michael (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Prieto, Javier (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
The possibility of reducing the angular spread of slow extracted particles with a time-dependent extraction bump at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is under investigation. In order to create this so-called dynamic bump, two orthogonal knobs were designed to enable independent movements of the beam in position and angle at the upstream end of the electrostatic extraction septum (ES). Slow Extraction Efficiency Measurements at CERN SPS / Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Cornelis, Karel (CERN) ; Esposito, Luigi Salvatore (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Roncarolo, Federico (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
The high efficiency of most slow extraction systems makes quantifying the exact amount of beam lost in the process extremely challenging. This is compounded by the lack of time structure in the extracted beam, as is typically required by the high-energy physics experiments, and the difficulty in accurately calibrating D.C. [...]

Optimization of Diffuser (Pre-Scatterer) Configurations for Slow Extraction Loss Reduction at Electrostatic Septa / Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Balhan, Bruno (CERN) ; Barna, Daniel (Wigner RCP, Budapest) ; Borburgh, Jan (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Jorat, Louise Olivia (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Lolliot, Christophe (CERN) ; Nagaslaev, Vladimir (Fermilab) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN) et al.
Uncontrolled beam loss at the electrostatic septum is a performance limit for several existing or planned high power hadron accelerators delivering slow-extracted spills to fixed targets. A passive diffuser, or pre-scatterer, in a suitable configuration has been shown to reduce such beamloss significantly, with the actual gain factor depending on the parameters and details of the extraction process and hardware. Effects of Electrostatic Septum Alignment on Particle Loss During Slow Extraction at CERN SPS / Prieto, Javier (CERN) ; Dutheil, Yann (CERN) ; Fraser, Matthew (CERN) ; Goddard, Brennan (CERN) ; Kagan, Michael (CERN) ; Kain, Verena (CERN) ; Stoel, Linda (CERN) ; Velotti, Francesco (CERN)
Slow extraction is an intrinsically lossy process that splits the beam with an electrostatic septum (ES), employing a thin-wire array to delimit the high electric field region that deflects the beam into the extraction channel. At CERN's Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) the ES is over 16 m long and composed of 5 separate units containing separate wire-arrays that can be moved independently. [...]
