The introduction at CERN of new extremely energetic particle accelerators, such as the high-luminosity large hadron collider (HL-LHC) or the proposed future circular collider (FCC), will increase the energy stored in the circulating particle beams by almost a factor of two (from 360 to 680 MJ) and of more than 20 (up to 8500 MJ), respectively. In this scenario, it is paramount to assess the dynamic thermomechanical response of materials presently used, or being developed for future use, in beam intercepting devices (such as collimators, targets, dumps, absorbers, spoilers, windows, etc.) exposed to potentially destructive events caused by the impact of energetic particle beams. Multiobjective genetic algorithm approach to optimize beam matching and beam transport in high-intensity hadron linacs / Yarmohammadi Satri, M (CERN ; IPM, Tehran) ; Lombardi, A M (CERN) ; Zimmermann, F (CERN)
In this article we demonstrate how a multiobjective genetic algorithm, like the nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGAII), and a selection tool, like the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS), can be employed for beam matching and for optimizing the beam transport in the low and medium energy section of a modern hadron linac including space charge effect. Combining NSGAII with the particle tracking code TRAVEL v4.07, we determine the Pareto optimal front, and then apply TOPSIS for the final selection using the example of the 160 MeV H$^−$ LINAC4 at CERN. Channeling and volume reflection of high-energy charged particles in short bent crystals. Crystal assisted collimation of the accelerator beam halo / Scandale, W (CERN) ; Taratin, A M (Dubna, JINR)
The experimental studies of high-energy charged particle deflection due to planar and axial channeling as well as volume reflection and multi volume reflections in short bent crystals at the extracted beams of the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) are considered. The experiments on the studies of crystal assisted collimation of the CERN SPS beam halo and the first similar experiment with the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beam of 6500 GeV/c protons are also considered..
