The IEEE Milestone event at CERN

On the initiative of its French and Swiss Sections, the IEEE has honoured CERN with an 'IEEE Milestone in the history of electricity and electronics' for the invention of the multi-wire proportional chamber in 1968.

The IEEE established the Electrical Engineering Milestones programe in 1983 to honour significant achievements in the history of electrical and electronics engineering. To be designated, an achievement must be at least 25 years old, must have involved a unique solution to an engineering problem, and must have had at least regional impact. Currently there are more than  50 IEEE Milestones around the world.

The installation and unveiling of this IEEE Milestone will provide the opportunity to emphasize the close relationship between science, technology, industry and well-being in society.  A ceremony, organised with the support of a group of IEEE members working at CERN, will be held at the CERN Globe of Science and Innovation on Monday 26 September 2005 from 16.30 to 20.00.

In view of the above event, and to be sure to reach all IEEE members working at CERN, the latter are invited to make themselves known to the  Organizing Committee, chaired by Erik Heijne, IEEE fellow. IEEE members are kindly invited to e-mail their details to Erik.Heijne@cern.ch, specifying the IEEE Society and Section to which they are affiliated.
