Claudine Baleur (mai 1937 – septembre 2012)

It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Claudine Baleur. Claudine, who joined CERN in 1970, worked at the Staff Association Secretariat for twenty years during which she focussed on social issues. Claudine took care of the kindergarten, the Christmas of children of CERN staff, the Staff Association part in the Weekly Bulletin, conferences and exhibitions, and was responsible for a variety of other tasks, which she assumed consciously throughout her long career amongst us until her retirement in 1996.

"Fighter and citizen of the world before her time," Claudine has lived a very committed life: as a member of French Red Cross teams in Algeria during a difficult period she has striven for the emancipation of Algerian women and for improving living conditions of children and the whole population.

Claudine had a long fight against disease. Yet, even after her health problems started she continued to have a life oriented towards others and rich with social and human relations. Later on the disease which she courageously faced, slyly and progressively paralyzed her.

Thanks to her firm will and the attentive presence of her husband, she was able to live her last difficult years at home where she died on Monday 3 September.

With all our condolences to her family.
